COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The Kearney Center launches the Beat the Heat campaign today to help homeless residents in the Big Bend region stay safe during summer by distributing bottled water, sunscreen, cooling towels and bug spray — donations can be dropped off at the center or given online.  ABC 27

BUSINESS NEWS

  • DirecTV customers in Tallahassee lost access to WTXL-TV when Scripps removed these channels on Sunday due to a contract dispute, affecting local sports viewing ahead of major events (negotiations continue).  Tallahassee Democrat

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Two FSU Anne’s College professors—Sarah A. Johnson and Ravinder Nagpal—earned fellowships from the American Society for Nutrition for their work in nutrition research. They will be honored at Nutrition 2026 in National Harbor from July 25–28.  Florida State University

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • The 2026 Atlantic hurricane season began yesterday with forecasts for fewer storms, but Florida residents must prepare for tropical weather. Officials advise checking local alerts & hurricane preparedness resources as inland or coastal areas may still be affected.  Tallahassee Democrat

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Jefferson County officials are ready to shelter residents during hurricanes and disasters, with the Red Cross + emergency crews set to open shelters and provide food and support. The county, which opened a shelter during Hurricane Helene in 2024 that served pets, urges neighbors to plan ahead.  ABC 27
  • Florida Attorney General James Uthmeier sued OpenAI on Monday alleging that ChatGPT’s design prioritized profit over user safety—raising concerns for minors. OpenAI said it built age protection tools to guard users.  CBS News

SPORTS NEWS

  • Tallahassee native Brady Neal powered Alabama into the NCAA Super Regional with a three-run home run in the 11th inning on May 31 at Sewell-Thomas Stadium (he earned MVP honors despite a dislocated thumb), and the team may face Florida State if they advance.  Tallahassee Democrat
