COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The American Red Cross Capital Area Florida Chapter is hosting its 2nd Annual Dine for Disaster Relief Event to raise funds for disaster response to home fires, tornadoes, and hurricanes—proceeds will support efforts across local counties. The event runs through today at participating locations.  ABC 27

CRIME NEWS

  • A judge on Friday ordered Daniel Spencer, the stepdad of 5-year-old Missy Mogle who died after alleged abuse in a Tallahassee home in May, to be held without bond—community members had held a vigil to honor her life.  WCTV
  • Phoenix Ikner—accused in the FSU mass shooting on April 17 that left two dead and six injured—is facing death penalty charges as his public defender filed a not guilty plea.  WFSU Public Media

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Florida lawmakers extended the session until June 18 — to work on a state budget that must be passed and signed by Gov. DeSantis before the month ends to avoid a partial shutdown. They will also review proposals for tax breaks, a $50 billion spending plan and a $250 million annual debt reduction measure.  WFSU Public Media
  • FAMU’s Board of Trustees approved a $650k annual salary package for president-elect Marva Johnson after a two-hour meeting on June 6th. Some trustees raised concerns about long-term costs and funding from university partners—while others defended the move, and her appointment will be confirmed by the Florida Board of Governors on June 18.  WFSU

HEALTH NEWS

  • Gov. Ron DeSantis signed a law that will ban fluoride from public water supplies starting July 1—dentists say this tool helps prevent cavities for children who lack regular dental care. Local health centers warn that the ban will make it even harder for families in low-income and rural areas to keep their children’s teeth healthy.  WFSU

SPORTS NEWS

  • Florida State baseball ace Jamie Arnold posted a season-high 13 strikeouts on May 31 during the Tallahassee Regional in a 10-3 win and finished the season with an 8-2 record and 3.12 ERA—analysts now project him as a top MLB draft pick. He will start in the upcoming Corvallis Super Regional against Oregon State.  Tallahassee Democrat
