Good morning, Tallahassee. Here's your local news at a glance for Tuesday, the 10th of June.

CRIME NEWS

  • FAMU Athletic Director Angela Suggs was arrested Monday after investigators found she misused a business credit card from her former job to pay for casino visits — she now faces one felony count of grand theft, one count of scheme to defraud and four misdemeanor counts while her bond was set at $13,500.  WCTV
  • A Leon County woman riding her bicycle was killed in a hit-and-run crash at the Blue Jay Lane intersection on Highway 20 just after 9 p.m. on June 8—authorities say the SUV fled the scene.  Tallahassee Democrat

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Governor Ron DeSantis signed a bill on May 21 that lets school districts submit a report on challenges—like transport costs and childcare issues—instead of changing start times required by a 2023 law for the 2026-2027 school year. For the 2025-2026 year, Florida schools must follow the rule that classes cannot begin earlier than Aug. 10, so many districts will start on Aug. 11.  Tallahassee Democrat

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Gov. DeSantis' administration sent an unsigned cease-and-desist letter on June 6 to an Orlando Sentinel reporter—accusing him of using threats to force foster families into giving negative statements about the First Lady’s Hope Florida initiative—and First Amendment experts said the move may chill press freedom.  Tallahassee Democrat
  • A federal appeals court blocked temporary enforcement of Florida’s new immigration law targeting undocumented immigrants and rejected Attorney General James Uthmeier’s request for a stay—judges ruled he had not met the requirements for relief.  WFSU Public Media

SPORTS NEWS

  • Florida State holds eight in-state commitments for the 2026 class while actively recruiting five top prospects (Chauncey Kennon, CJ Bronaugh, Kendall Guervil, Jasen Lopez and DQ Forkpa JR.) The program has hosted official visits and expects to finalize extra commitments by December.  Tallahassee Democrat
  • Starting July 1, Florida State may pay athletes directly after the House settlement approved by Judge Claudia Wilken—this allows up to $20.5 million in revenue sharing with $2.5 million set aside for scholarships. FSU officials, including vice president Michael Alford and football coach Mike Norvell, said the program is ready to use flexible roster rules that let players finish their eligibility.  Tallahassee Democrat
