Good morning, Tallahassee. Here's your local news at a glance for Thursday, the 12th of June.

CRIME NEWS

  • Angela Suggs, FAMU’s athletic director and former Tallahassee non-profit head, turned herself in at Leon County jail on fraud and theft charges after using a Florida Sports Foundation credit card for casino trips that totaled over $23,000 from August 2022 to August 2024. She said the charges were errors and began repaying the amounts in March 2024—FAMU placed her on administrative leave with pay and court hearings have not yet been scheduled.  Tallahassee Democrat

EDUCATION NEWS

  • FAMU freshmen won a $20K prize at the Henry Ford Learning Institute Test Track Competition today + they earned a social innovation award for their EcoArm project that sorts recyclables. They will partner with local nonprofits to help bring the project to life.  WCTV
  • Madison and Jefferson County school districts plan to share administrative positions including ESE, transportation, and human resources directors — a move to save over $150,000 amid declining enrollment and hurricane recovery costs — to free up funds for classrooms. Madison County approved the plan on June 2 and Jefferson County will vote on it June 23 — if approved, salary costs will be split based on each district’s workload — to ease financial pressures and better support teacher and student needs.  Tallahassee Democrat

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Gov. Ron DeSantis and his Cabinet approved spending nearly $118 million to conserve about 76,000 acres in North Florida by purchasing two conservation easements for properties used in farming and recreation. They also approved a $5.933 million deal for a 1,745-acre easement through the Rural and Family Lands Protection Program — the moves aim to protect the land from future development.  WFSU

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • On May 14th, the Tallahassee City Commission held a public hearing to send changes to the Comprehensive Plan to state reviewers that would allow more homes and business uses in established neighborhoods—about 25 local advocates warned the plan might lead to unwanted construction, and officials delayed the final vote until June 11th to work more with community groups.  Tallahassee Reports
  • A 52-year-old woman from Live Oak was detained by ICE during a check-in in Tallahassee on June 3 and her daughter says she was handcuffed—shackled by her ankles and wrists—and denied both a translator and her diabetes medication. She has lived in the U.S. for nearly 30 years and is now being moved to Texas, which will make it harder for her legal counsel to assist her.  Tallahassee Democrat
  • House and Senate budget negotiators reached an agreement to give state workers a 2% raise—with higher boosts for law enforcement officers and firefighters—and to raise K-12 funding by 1.59% relying on local property taxes. Lawmakers will vote on the roughly $115 billion spending plan early next week after they resolve remaining issues in health care, education, corrections and tax proposals.  Tallahassee Reports

SPORTS NEWS

  • Chiles grad Chris Stanfield is joining LSU as they head to Omaha for the College World Series after sweeping West Virginia in the Super Regional, and he said he is excited to represent Tallahassee. LSU will face Arkansas Saturday at 7 p.m. (Stanfield eagerly awaits his debut) (local fans celebrate his achievement).  WCTV
  • Murray State baseball advanced to the College World Series for the first time after beating Duke 5-4 on June 9 in the Durham Super Regional — a historic win that former TSC pitcher Harper McLendon said came from the team’s hard work. The team will depart for Omaha on June 11 and face UCLA on Saturday, June 14 at 2 p.m. on ESPN.  Tallahassee Democrat
