Good morning, Tallahassee. Here's your local news at a glance for Friday, the 13th of June.

CULTURE NEWS

  • Tallahassee will celebrate Juneteenth with a week of events, beginning with the Juneteenth Unity Festival at Cascades Park on June 14 from 2 to 8 p.m.—featuring live performances, food vendors, games, and art. Additional events on June 19 include the Lloyd Music Day Party at The Hole with a special performance by 803Fresh—along with a pop-up social at Railroad Square supporting Black-owned businesses and an evening of music and conversation at St. Michael and All Angels Episcopal Church.  Tallahassee Democrat
  • This weekend, Tallahassee residents can enjoy live music at Blue Tavern, free campus tours and garden dedications at LeMoyne Arts, and slices of tradition at the 74th Annual Monticello Watermelon Festival on Friday and Saturday. GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Local experts say the school zone speed limit law is unclear so drivers may be confused by when the 20 mph rule applies — Tallahassee officials are issuing citations based on the city's interpretation. Community members also raise concerns over malfunctioning traffic signals and rough conditions on Roberts Avenue which may prompt further review.  Tallahassee Democrat
  • City and county commissioners are negotiating with the Washington Square developer to repair damaged sidewalks and roads after the stalled project racked up more than $400,000 in fines over five years. The developer will have 60 days to complete repairs — or face legal action if no agreement is reached.  Tallahassee Democrat
  • City leaders voted 3—2 on June 12 to end plans to use eminent domain for a proposed Circle K gas station at Welaunee Boulevard and Dempsey Mayo Road as city attorney Amy Toman said there was no legal basis for it. Mayor John Dailey plans to try again to reach a deal while residents worry the site is too close to homes.  WFSU Public Media
  • FSU's Election Law Center will not get state funding for the 2025-26 fiscal year after the Senate took away a planned $950,000 and the House agreed today—leaving the center without a set funding plan. Opened in 2023 with a one-time $1 million gift, the center now waits for lawmakers—who are expected to secure future support.  Tallahassee Democrat
