ECONOMY NEWS

  • Tallahassee’s North Monroe Street lost longtime landmarks like Barnacle Bill’s after a fire, and the busy road sees over 20,000 vehicles each day — a sign of shifting business in this city gateway. Leon County Commissioner Rick Minor said the city will build a police station and community center on the old Northwood Mall property—plans that come with new proposals such as Dutch Brothers Coffee moving in.  WFSU

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Today, a school board review warned that the planned Welaunee development, set to add over 7,400 new homes, will push several northeast Leon schools beyond capacity—prompting officials to consider options like adding classrooms or building a new school.  Tallahassee Democrat
  • FSU's Board of Trustees approved a $2.97 billion operating budget for 2025–26 — one percent lower than last year's record amount. The budget allocates $485.6 million for capital projects — such as Legacy Hall, a new Football Operations Facility and an Academic Health Center — and tuition has not increased in 12 years while pay raises remain pending.  Tallahassee Democrat
  • In April, FAMU’s School of Architecture and Engineering Technology celebrated its 50th anniversary with a golden jubilee that featured tours of new labs+ demonstrations of innovative technology and strong partnerships with key companies.   • A Florida bill to ban oil drilling near the Apalachicola River remains uncertain as Gov. DeSantis may veto the measure—supporters plan to rally today at the Apalachicola Yacht Club while opponents await the outcome of a permit appeal.  Tallahassee Democrat

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • A new Florida budget amendment will let FAMU use extra public funds to pay President Marva Johnson by bypassing a law that limits salary spending + the change comes as the school and its board work to resolve a dispute over the high pay, and Florida lawmakers will vote on the plan today.  WFSU Public Media
