- ➤ On Monday, June 16, ULA launched its Atlas V rocket carrying Amazon Project Kuiper satellites from Cape Canaveral Space Force Station; clear weather helped many see the bright launch in parts of Florida + other states. Tallahassee Democrat
CRIME NEWS
- ➤ A Tallahassee man, John Horne, was sentenced to 20 years in prison + 10 years probation for DUI manslaughter after a hit-and-run in Jefferson County in September 2023 that killed FSU student and cyclist Jake Boykin, and he also received one year probation for leaving the scene. WCTV
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ FAMU alumni and students filed a 154-page civil lawsuit on Monday against the FAMU Board of Trustees and the Florida Board of Governors, alleging that an eight-month search resulted in a predetermined selection of Marva Johnson in violation of the state Constitution. The lawsuit seeks an emergency injunction + an independent investigation before the board votes on Johnson tomorrow. WCTV
- ➤ Tallahassee State College and Charter Schools USA have approved plans to open Florida’s first AI-integrated middle school this August at the Appleyard Drive campus for grades 6-8. The free charter school—Innovation Academy of Excellence—will serve 100-125 students using a microschool format that embeds artificial intelligence in every class. Tallahassee Democrat
- ➤ Florida State University Information Technology’s Third-Party Risk Management Program won a national CSO Award for using new ways to check vendor risks. The program was created after a 2021 audit and will be celebrated at the CSO Conference + Awards this fall. Florida State University

- ➤ At its next meeting, the Tallahassee City Commission will review the ICE agreement that lets a police officer help with immigration arrests, after a recent Gaines Street enforcement sparked debate over the 287(g) deal—signed without City Commission approval. Tallahassee Reports
- ➤ On Thursday, June 19, non-essential federal offices, post offices and the stock market will be closed for Juneteenth—a holiday that marks the end of slavery—while UPS, FedEx and local DMV offices will run normal operations. Some banks may follow the holiday schedule even though ATMs and online banking remain available. Tallahassee Democrat
