EDUCATION NEWS

  • At least 10 FAMU students rallied at Eternal Flame on Wednesday morning to oppose president-elect Marva Johnson, coming just hours before a Florida Board of Governors vote on her appointment. A 154-page lawsuit filed by students and alumni alleged that her selection was predetermined in violation of the state Constitution — fueling ongoing protest over the presidential search.  WCTV

  • Tallahassee was ranked among the top 20 best-run cities in America by WalletHub after being named a finalist for the All-American City Award. City officials credit efficient budgeting and innovative services—measured by 36 quality metrics and budget comparisons for 148 cities—with the recognition.  Tallahassee Democrat
  • A bill to ban oil drilling within 10 miles of a national estuarine research reserve reached Governor Ron DeSantis’s desk after coastal protests and the denial of drilling permits; he has 15 days to sign the measure—if he does not act, the bill will automatically become law—.  WFSU
  • A federal judge found Attorney General James Uthmeier in civil contempt for sending an April 23 letter that told police to ignore a restraining order stopping the enforcement of a state immigration law—he was ordered to file bi-weekly reports on any related law enforcement actions. Uthmeier is appealing the decision while claiming he disagrees with the court order.  Tallahassee Reports
  • Leon County Government's FY 2026 budget shows $16.5 million in new general revenue and projected changes in expenses. The budget relies on a $15.3 million increase from property taxes based on higher property values — about 60% of which will fund the county Sheriff’s Office.  Tallahassee Reports
  • After lawmakers passed a $115.1 billion state budget for next fiscal year, Florida TaxWatch released its turkey report Tuesday—questioning nearly $1 billion in spending. The report flagged 242 items worth $416.1 million and noted Gov. Ron DeSantis may use his veto power to review extra spending on water projects and housing.  Tallahassee Reports

  • Tallahassee Memorial Healthcare released details about a January cybersecurity event when a previous vendor allowed unauthorized access to patient data — letters were sent on June 13 to inform affected patients and its current electronic health record system remains intact.  ABC 27

SPORTS NEWS

  • Three FAMU baseball players from Tallahassee—Jay Campbell, Broedy Poppell and Garrett Workman—will play in the HBCU Swingman Classic at Truist Park in Atlanta on July 11 at 7 p.m. They earned top SWAC honors last season and will represent FAMU in this all-star game.  Tallahassee Democrat
