- ➤ United Way of the Big Bend announced funding priorities for 63 programs in its eight-county area that will receive just under $1.25 million over the next two years—focusing on housing, education, health and rental and utility assistance amid high rates of working poor. - ➤ Leon County’s Neighborhood Recognition Program and the Council of Neighborhood Associations are accepting nominations for the 44th Annual Neighborhood Awards, which honor local neighbors and neighborhoods for improving safety and civic spirit—applications are due by 5 p.m. July 16. - ➤ Julie Carswell runs operations at The Moon and takes care of event planning, staffing, and accounting—her work makes the venue a favorite for live music in Tallahassee. - ➤ FAMU Foundation may avoid contributing extra funds to cover President Marva Johnson’s $942,400 salary for the 2025—26 fiscal year as a state budget provision lets the Board of Trustees use reserve funds instead of tapping the foundation’s planned $388,562. The board will meet later to adjust its plans while future compensation amounts remain uncertain pending Gov. Ron DeSantis’ approval due today. Tallahassee Democrat

- ➤ Secondhand and vintage stores are promoting the slow fashion movement to reduce waste and lessen water use in clothing production — a move aimed at cutting pollution and resource waste. - ➤ Governor DeSantis signed the Tristin Murphy Act on June 29 to change how mental health is handled in the justice system after Tristin Murphy killed himself in prison in 2021—Jim spoke with Murphy’s mother who helped bring the law to life. CBS News
- ➤ Tallahassee was declared a three-time All-America City by local leaders at the National Civic League conference in Denver on Sunday night—this honor builds on wins in 1999 and 2015 and leads to plans for a citywide celebration in the coming weeks. Tallahassee Democrat
- ➤ Tallahassee and Leon County officials announced that government offices, libraries, and community centers will close on Friday, July 4 for Independence Day while residential garbage and recycling collection is delayed to Saturday, July 5. StarMetro will run on a Sunday schedule with free shuttles to the Celebrate America event (pickups from the former Sears parking lot) and animal services including the Animal Service Center will resume limited hours (appointments start at 10 a.m. on July 5).
