Good morning, Tallahassee. Here's your local news at a glance for Tuesday, the 1st of July.

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Most major Florida grocery stores will be open on Fourth of July with either regular or limited hours—Costco will be closed and Trader Joe's will finish early—while shoppers should check local store hours (holiday schedules vary) before planning trips. This information helps guide those securing last-minute items for the holiday.  Tallahassee Democrat

CULTURE NEWS

  • Tallahassee residents will enjoy a four-day Fourth of July weekend with fireworks, live music and parades at spots like Tom Brown Park and Cascades Park—nearby coastal towns and communities such as SouthWood and Eastpoint also plan shows and family activities from today through July 5.  Tallahassee Democrat

EDUCATION NEWS

  • A new report from the Florida Chamber of Commerce Foundation said business leaders want math classes to teach skills like critical thinking, data analysis, and budgeting to better prepare students for work. The study recommends that schools change their math curriculum and partner with local companies (for example, guest lectures and field trips) to give students real-world examples.  WFSU Public Media

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • The National Hurricane Center says a disturbance will stall over Florida later this week and has a low chance of developing into a tropical storm—this system may bring heavy rain, gusty winds and rough surf to local beaches during the Fourth of July weekend.  Tallahassee Democrat

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Governor Ron DeSantis signed a bill into law that adds new safeguards to Florida’s child protection system by requiring the Department of Children and Families to recruit case managers, collect placement data, and pilot a foster care program for children with complex mental health needs. The law aims to help combat child sex trafficking by keeping children away from commercial sexual exploitation (ensuring safer oversight for state care placements).  WFSU Public Media

SPORTS NEWS

  • Florida State will begin paying student athletes for their name, image and likeness today after the House settlement allowed the school to share revenue up to $20.5 million for 2025-26.
