- ➤ Today, Tallahassee celebrates Independence Day and its third All-America City honor — an award given by the National Civic League that recognizes strong community efforts. - ➤ A divided federal appeals court ruled to back a Florida law that requires teachers to use pronouns matching their sex assigned at birth. The panel reversed a judge’s earlier block in the case of high-school teacher Katie Wood and said her speaking in class is part of her official duties — meaning teachers must follow the rule when they teach. - ➤ Camron Cooper, a 25-year-old political newcomer, filed his candidacy for mayor on June 27 while veteran leaders like John E. Dailey, Jeremy Matlow and Christian Caban send mixed messages about whether they will run. Cooper said he will address issues such as housing affordability+ homelessness+ public safety to help improve the city. Tallahassee Democrat
- ➤ Governor Ron DeSantis signed Senate Bill 892 to codify the FSU College of Law Election Law Center—created with a $1 million appropriation in 2023—to boost election integrity and give students hands-on learning in election law. The center works with officials to improve election procedures and voter confidence. Florida State University
- ➤ Plaintiff attorneys argued that the Supreme Court should keep the block on Florida's immigration law — they said it clashes with federal authority. Attorney General Uthmeier had asked for a stay to let officials enforce the law while his appeal was pending — a federal panel denied his request and a hearing will take place in October.
