  • Florida State University announced its 2025—2026 Opening Nights season titled 'Opening Minds' and will start selling public tickets at 11 a.m. on Aug. 7. The season features shows by Jeff Goldblum and The Mildred Snitzer Orchestra on Sept. 5, bestselling authors James Patterson and Patrick Leddin on Sept. 28, and Morgan Freeman’s Symphonic Blues Experience on Oct. 3 at several Tallahassee venues — including Ruby Diamond Concert Hall and Goodwood Museum and Gardens.  Florida State University

  • Leon County Schools faced a federal freeze on over $6M in their budget but earned a B for the school year that ended—just two points from an A. Two elementary schools made big score jumps as board members celebrated the progress and stressed that the hard work must continue.  WFSU

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Wakulla County drivers on FH-13 near the county line must use alternate routes after the Ochlockonee River Bridge was closed for emergency repairs — Liberty County is installing concrete barriers for driver safety and officials are uncertain of the repair duration.  Tallahassee Democrat
  • Florida lawmakers will tour the state's new migrant detention facility known as Alligator Alcatraz this weekend amid controversy and a pending lawsuit—only elected officials who RSVP by Friday are allowed to attend. Critics say the remote facility and its reported conditions raise serious human rights concerns while state officials insist it meets required standards.  ABC 27
  • A new state law signed on June 26 stops local governments from enforcing stricter building codes in hurricane-prone areas—critics say it favors developers—and several cities, including Tallahassee and Deltona, are planning legal challenges or moratoriums on new construction. Lawmakers passed the measure to speed recovery after storms while local officials worry it will put residents at risk.  Tallahassee Democrat
