CRIME NEWS
- ➤ A man was injured after an unknown person shot him outside a Frenchtown home on July 11 near 6:15 p.m.—police say the suspect fled in a waiting vehicle and no arrests have been made. Tallahassee Democrat
ECONOMY NEWS
- ➤ The U.S. Agriculture Department released numbers Friday showing that Florida’s citrus industry ended the 2024-2025 season with the lowest production since 1919-1920—orange production fell 32.7% and grapefruit, tangerine, and lemon output dropped sharply. The Legislature approved $124.5 million in aid for the next fiscal year—funds that will support new disease-resistant trees and grove management. Tallahassee Reports
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ Brian Murphy, an FSU alumnus and CEO of ReliaQuest, was appointed by the Florida Board of Governors to the FSU Board of Trustees on July 11 and begins his term immediately pending Florida Senate confirmation. Murphy, who graduated in 2000, will use his business and tech skills to help guide the university. Florida State University
- ➤ Most Florida schools will begin on August 11 while some counties start later, and a month-long back-to-school tax holiday runs from August 1 to 31. A new law bans cell phones and tablets during school hours in elementary and middle schools—check with your local district for details. Tallahassee Democrat
- ➤ The board overseeing Florida public universities voted on Friday to create a new accreditor that must get federal approval and focus on outcomes. The new accreditor received a $4 million start-up investment from the state while five other southern states were expected to contribute & critics said the move could change how universities get funding and set standards. - ➤ Leon County and developer Ken McDermott reached an agreement to repair county-owned property affected by stalled construction at Washington Square in downtown Tallahassee — the repairs must be finished within 60 days of the July 9 agreement with a possible 45-day extension and a $1,000 per day penalty if not met.
