  • Tickets are on sale for the 12th Annual Spare A Life Funday benefiting the Animal Shelter Foundation, which supports homeless animals served by Tallahassee Animal Services. The event will take place Thursday, Aug. 7 from 5 to 9 p.m. at Hangar 38—where families of all ages can enjoy games, bowling and fundraising opportunities.  Tallahassee Democrat

  • Local retiree Mark Newman started Single Tree Products when a surplus of fig and other neighbor fruits led him to craft unique jams and granola by hand—he now sells his small-batch creations at the Tallahassee Downtown Market on select Saturdays and offers free local delivery. His focus remains on a personal touch by using fruit from one tree per batch to give each jar a sense of place.  Tallahassee Democrat

  • Hundreds of students received 515 brand new bookbags and free school supplies — including books, face paintings, clothes, and hygiene products — from DJ Demp’s annual Back to School Backpack Giveaway in Tallahassee, easing the financial strain on families as they prepared for the school year.  WCTV

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • After a slow start to the season, meteorologists say a weak tropical disturbance is bringing scattered showers through tomorrow and the National Hurricane Center is monitoring two areas with a 50% chance of developing into tropical storms—signaling that hurricane season will heat up later this month. Residents should stay alert as the storm systems may rapidly form over warm waters and could impact open coastal areas.  WCTV
