  • Today, Tallahassee resident Christine Prescott celebrates her 100th birthday—she remains active on the North Florida Fair Board and leads her homeowners’ association—and her family hosted a birthday bash over the weekend.  WCTV

  • The Texas-based family tea chain H-Tea-O closed its Tallahassee location after one year due to lower summer sales & rising product costs along with ongoing construction that made it hard for customers to reach the shop. Locals remember the shop for offering 25 iced teas & warm Southern hospitality.  Tallahassee Democrat

CRIME NEWS

  • On August 4th the Leon County Sheriff’s Office warned residents that criminals may follow them home from the bank in a tactic called bank jugging—officials urged extra caution and awareness at all times.  WCTV

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Leon County teachers have shared wish lists asking the community for help in funding classroom supplies ahead of the new school year starting August 11. The lists include items from pencils and hand soap to sensory toys and classroom furniture—community members are encouraged to support these efforts.  Tallahassee Democrat

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Tropical Storm Dexter formed off the coast of North Carolina on Aug. 3 and moved northeast into the northern Atlantic— it is not expected to hit Florida or the U.S. The National Hurricane Center is also tracking a system near Florida’s coast and a tropical wave off Africa with a 50% chance to develop later this week.  Tallahassee Democrat

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Today the My Safe Florida Home Program reopens its application period to offer matching grants that help homeowners upgrade roof-to-wall connectors, water resistance barriers, windows, doors and garage doors to protect against hurricane damage—280 million dollars is available and applications close Sept 29. Since 2022 nearly 40,000 Floridians have benefited from the program.  WFLA

HEALTH NEWS

  • Publix recalled its Cheddar & Herb Biscuits sold before Aug. 1 — as they did not list soy allergens — and customers must throw them away or return them for a refund.  Tallahassee Democrat
  • Tallahassee resident Jessie Blood battled interstitial lung disease and now needs a lung transplant. Her husband Josh made a TikTok video and set up a GoFundMe that raised nearly $230K—far above the $50K goal—to help pay for her transplant at the Mayo Clinic in Jacksonville.  Tallahassee Democrat
