Good morning, Tallahassee. Here's your local news at a glance for Wednesday, the 6th of August.

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Florida State University experts in student mental health, language and literacy, and artificial intelligence in schools are available via email for back-to-school coverage — they cover key research areas as students return for the 2025-26 academic year.  Florida State University
  • Florida schools are adding a new AI system called ZeroEyes to scan live security camera video for guns as students return to class. GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Supporters of proposed constitutional amendments and voting rights groups filed appeals to the 11th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals after a federal district judge refused to block parts of a new law that restricts Florida’s ballot-initiative process—political committees sponsoring 2026 proposals and individual plaintiffs also challenged rules on volunteer registration and petition signature collection—and the appeals now will have the court review these contested measures. The move follows earlier legal steps taken by both sides in response to efforts that supporters say aim to unfairly limit ballot initiatives.  Tallahassee Reports
  • Florida senators filed 14 bills on Friday that ask for tens of millions of dollars for injuries and deaths tied to alleged government negligence — one bill seeks $28 million from the Department of Children and Families for a child's injuries in Sarasota while other bills target different agencies and have been proposed before as lawmakers prepare for the 2026 session starting Jan 13.  WFSU

HEALTH NEWS

  • FSU’s University Health Services received a $20,000 grant from Truth Initiative to boost its vaping prevention program—adding peer educators and hosting seminars to raise policy awareness and offer cessation support. The two-year plan will help protect students, faculty and staff by promoting a tobacco- and nicotine-free environment.  Florida State University
  • Public health officials said Monday that 21 people — including six children — became ill with E. coli or campylobacter after drinking raw milk from a farm with poor sanitation, and seven were hospitalized with at least two facing severe complications.  The Independent

SPORTS NEWS

  • Wakulla High School’s War Eagles, coached by Scott Klees, finished an 8—4 season last year and are set to face strong teams in 2025. They will open on Aug. 14 in the K.O.
