- ➤ Flea market vendors—relocating from the almost 40-year-old Flea Market Tallahassee—are moving to historic Frenchtown this weekend after the long-running market closed. They will sell fresh produce, jewelry, and FAMU paraphernalia at the Tallahassee Urban League at 923 Old Bainbridge Road from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday. WCTV

- ➤ FAMU lost two recent graduates—Jayden Flemming and Ronnie Burns, II—who died in a car accident and now offers counseling services while a GoFundMe has raised over $80,000 for their funeral expenses. WCTV
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ For the 2025-26 school year, most Florida counties will have classes begin on August 11 while some, like Bradford, Holmes, and Miami-Dade, will start on August 12, 13, or 14 (Alachua, Baker, and Bay counties follow the August 11 start). State law sets the earliest start date at August 10 and postpones later start time requirements for middle and high schools until July 1. Tallahassee Democrat
- ➤ Anthony Neal, head of the FAMU Foundation, resigned with his leave starting on August 1st and his resignation set to take effect on September 30th. University official Alonda Thomas confirmed the move+ further details on his reasons remain unclear+ the change comes less than a week into new president Marva Johnson’s tenure. WCTV
- ➤ The Leon County School Board met on July 29 and unanimously approved a Tentative Budget Hearing for Tuesday, September 9 at 6:00 p.m. at Aquilina C. Howell Center—along with policy amendments effective July 30, several contracts including a $14,131,975 GMP for Griffin Middle School and a FINALSITE contract, the nomination of Darryl Jones for the Children’s Service Council, and out-of-county travel for board member Alva Smith while rejecting an RFP for a school bus infraction detection system. - ➤ Phillip Rumlin-Bond, an 18-year-old violinist from Gretna who studied with Patrice Floyd at Javacya Arts Conservatory, earned a prestigious scholarship to attend The Hartt School Conservatory of Music. His award covers most tuition valued between $50,000 and $60,000 — he still must raise $3,500 per semester for the remaining costs. Tallahassee Democrat
- ➤ Farrukh Alvi, a professor and executive at the FAMU and FSU College of Engineering, was named a Royal Aeronautical Society fellow for his work in aerospace and student mentoring. He helped launch the InSPIRE institute to build wind tunnels and manufacturing facilities that will create jobs in the Panhandle — a move that boosts local innovation — and he holds several patents in compressor technology. - ➤ The Tallahassee Police Department released its 2024 report showing it closed all 18 homicide cases—its first full clearance rate in several years. The report noted that nearly 10,000 property crime cases were worked on and the real-time crime center made 8,972 assists—helping police reduce investigation times and secure 416 arrests.
