BUSINESS NEWS

  • Twenty-eight children learned budgeting, public speaking, and creative branding in a free Kidpreneur summer program by the Early Learning Coalition that ended with a marketplace at the Jim Moran Institute for Global Entrepreneurship. Jaxson Welch launched his jewelry business during the event — with family support — and families can enroll for the next summer program in April.  Tallahassee Democrat

CULTURE NEWS

  • Tallahassee hosts a variety of weekend events featuring live music, theater, and cultural festivals that begin today with shows at The Sound Bar and Blue Tavern. The lineup includes Pyramid Players’ musical comedy, a Hispanic festival at Goodwood Museum, and a tasting at the Tallahassee Beer Festival — each event offers a distinct local arts experience for all ages — as the community gears up for a vibrant celebration.  Tallahassee Democrat
  • Thursday Night Music Club will perform its 17th annual Jazz Showcase at Ruby Diamond Concert Hall on Aug. 14 at 7:30 p.m.—tickets cost $17 and the program features big band tunes by Count Basie, Ray Charles, and other legends.  Tallahassee Democrat

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Leon County Schools will resume on Monday and officials advised drivers to slow down in school zones as nearly 30,000 children walk or ride to school with speed cameras set to issue a $100 fine for exceeding the speed limit. Superintendent Rocky Hanna said the district is short on bus drivers and faces a $12.5 million budget gap—safety measures will not be affected as plans for a possible millage increase progress.  WCTV
  • Leon County public schools will start on Monday with 30,000 students—despite rising expenses and a teacher shortage—while Superintendent Rocky Hanna remains optimistic about providing a high-quality education. He warned that a $6 million budget gap and limited funding for private voucher programs could worsen challenges for traditional schools.  WFSU

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Florida public media outlets lost nearly $26 million in federal and state funding after CPB shut down and Gov DeSantis vetoed additional funds—local stations in Tallahassee and other cities are now planning donation drives and restructuring programming to meet future needs—with officials warning that further cuts could force staff reductions and lower local coverage.  Tallahassee Democrat

  • Tallahassee-Leon Babe Ruth Baseball said its 14U team will head to Hot Springs, Arkansas on Aug. 9 + its 13U team will travel to Jamestown, New York on Aug. 16 after winning state and regional tournaments.
