BUSINESS NEWS

  • Lucilla, a local restaurant known for its upscale Southern-inspired comfort food, closed its doors in August after owner Joe Richardson said harsh summers and slow business left the restaurant losing money since the pandemic. Owners Joseph Richardson and Lara Hooper, who opened the restaurant in January 2018, now face financial challenges and are considering a break or moving on—prompting local calls for more support of Tallahassee eateries.  Tallahassee Democrat
  • Local vendors held a pop-up market in historic Frenchtown on Saturday after Flea Market Tallahassee closed in July following over 40 years of operation. The Tallahassee Urban League provided the space and will reopen the market today from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.—featuring booths for jewelry, clothes, and accessories—until a permanent location is found.  WCTV

  • Tallahassee writer Phyllis McCranie released 'Roses are Real and Other Flashes of Fiction,' a collection of 19 short stories that blend fantasy and real-life insights (published by Next Chapter Publishing).  Tallahassee Democrat

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Griffin Middle School is planning a comeback under new principal Kerri Anderson — the school will use collaborative lesson planning and community events to raise its grade from a D to at least a C while aiming for an A next school year. The school faced many challenges last year, including a tragic student death and leadership changes — efforts to rebuild trust continue in Griffin Heights.  Tallahassee Democrat

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Leon County announced that a lane on Oak Ridge Road from Crawfordville Road to Wimpole Lane will close starting Monday for milling and resurfacing to improve the road. Construction will run daily from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.—the lane will be closed from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and the work may last until the end of October if weather allows.  WCTV

  • Hugues Balde grew a mango tree in his Tallahassee backyard on Aug. 8 by using heat lamps to stop it from freezing—he said the tree brings a piece of Haiti to his home.  Tallahassee Democrat
