- ➤ In August 2018, Florida college sophomore Baylie Grogan was critically injured in a rideshare incident in Miami and later died, and her New Hampshire mother, Shawnee Baker, said that not having healthcare documents prevented her from advocating for her daughter—prompting her to start a foundation to help families prepare. - ➤ Florida State University's Welcome FSU series will begin Monday, Aug. 18 and run until Saturday, Aug. 30 to help new and returning students connect with academic resources, dining tours, movies, sports events and community activities. - ➤ Reginald James was approved by the Gadsden County Commission to serve as interim county administrator until the county finds a permanent replacement. WCTV
- ➤ Gov. Ron DeSantis said on Thursday that the state will convert the shuttered Baker Correctional Institution into an immigrant detention center to offer 1,300 beds at a cost of about $6 million, replacing a more expensive Camp Blanding plan.
