ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • On Saturday, Hurricane Erin reached Category 5 strength and is expected to keep that intensity as it turns north in the coming days. The storm will stay away from North Florida and South Georgia, though high waves and dangerous surf are likely along the Atlantic coast.  WCTV

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Sue Dick is stepping down as president and CEO of the Greater Tallahassee Chamber of Commerce after 25 years, and she will give her last speech at the Annual Community Conference this week—marking the end of her tenure. Her work helped boost growth through projects like the Blueprint sales tax and the recruitment of Danfoss Turbocar.  Tallahassee Democrat

  • Lincoln's Trojans crushed Carol City 40-13 in the Kickoff Classic on August 16 as Taylor Jacobs Jr. threw three touchdown passes and five players scored — they will open the regular season against Niceville on August 22.  Tallahassee Democrat
  • The Tallahassee-Leon Babe Ruth 14U All-Stars won the Babe Ruth World Series with a 9-2 win over Mexico on Aug 16 in Hot Springs, Arkansas — the team finished the tournament with a 7-0 record and earned top awards for players like Canaan Volpe and Liam LaFuria.   • Kevin Record, a 65-year-old Leon High teacher and tennis coach, arrived in Madrid on Aug 16 to enjoy the city—he will soon resume his 12 to 14 month world cycling journey toward Amsterdam and Berlin to cover over 18,000 miles, set a Guinness record, and support the Alzheimer’s Association in honor of his late parents.  Tallahassee Democrat
