CRIME NEWS

  • Robert Frable, a retired pediatrician who lived with Missy Mogle’s family, was arrested on Aug. 19 for failing to report abuse he witnessed—spankings and confinement—that the 5-year-old suffered before her death.  Tallahassee Democrat
  • On August 20, Donna Adelson's murder trial resumed with jury selection as Judge Stephen Everett and lawyers questioned roughly 300 potential jurors in closed sessions to assess media exposure—those who passed were asked to return at 11 a.m. Thursday at the Leon County Courthouse for group selection.  Tallahassee Democrat

EDUCATION NEWS

  • FSU’s APPLE program gave 12 students a visit to the White House and another trip to the Capitol where they met Rep. Maxwell Frost + FSU alumni who work on Capitol Hill. The program blends classroom work with real government experience and will launch its fourth group of students this fall.  Florida State University
  • Today, Florida’s education commissioner Anastasios Kamoutsas said teachers' unions delayed pay increases despite nearly $6 billion spent on salaries since 2020. He added that delays such as in Leon County are unacceptable—urging educators to pressure union reps for their bonus funds.  WFLA
  • This summer, the FSU Honors Program launched a study abroad program in London that sent fifteen Honors students on a four-week trip to explore Roman history with visits to sites including Hadrian’s Wall—providing hands-on learning under the guidance of Honors Professor Michael Furman. The program will be offered again next summer to further expand immersive education opportunities.  Florida State University

SPORTS NEWS

  • Florida State quarterback Tommy Castellanos says he is at his best as he prepares to lead his team in their season opener against No. 8 Alabama on Aug. 30—he praised his wide receivers and said Tony White’s defense is the toughest he will face this season.  Tallahassee Democrat
  • Florida State alum Parker Messick made his MLB debut for the Cleveland Guardians on August 20 against the Arizona Diamondbacks, pitching 6 2/3 innings with six strikeouts and one walk while allowing one run on seven hits. He left the game with a 2-1 lead before the Diamondbacks rallied in 10 innings for a 3-2 win—his strong start suggests promise for his future.  Tallahassee Democrat
