CRIME NEWS

  • Donna Adelson’s murder trial began Aug 22 when state witnesses testified about the killing of Dan Markel—citing emails and wiretaps—and Judge Stephen Everett warned against wasting jurors’ time as the 75-year-old defendant faces life in prison if convicted.  Tallahassee Democrat
  • A Tallahassee man was found guilty of 1st degree murder and conspiracy for his role in a deadly shooting at a Circle K on Monroe Street on May 17th where he shot victim Shannon Washington and later fled in a gold Buick sedan—court records show he returned to fire again before driving away.  WCTV

FINANCE NEWS

  • Kiersten Smith from State Farm in Crawfordville warned that homeowners near sea level need to get flood insurance as hurricane season peaks due to a 30-day waiting period—residents should contact an agent soon to avoid coverage gaps.  ABC 27

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • At the August 20 meeting, the city commission approved several items including two juvenile justice grants for the Palmer Munroe Teen Center, reappointing Jeremy Floyd to the Board of Adjustment and Appeals, appointing Mayor Pro Tem Dianne Williams Cox to the Canopy Road Citizen Committee, and filling four seats on the Council on Culture and Arts—staff also reviewed citizen concerns over Madison Street traffic calming and new final plat procedures required by a state law.  Tallahassee Reports

  • The Kearney Center held a grand opening yesterday for its new on-site medical clinic, marking a step to offer local healthcare closer to its community.  WCTV

SPORTS NEWS

  • The Tallahassee-Leon Babe Ruth 13U All-Stars won the World Series on Aug. 23 in Jamestown after turning a 5 to 4 deficit into a 13 to 5 win over Stamford, Connecticut. The team finished the tournament undefeated with a 6 to 0 record—earning its second summer title after the 14U squad won earlier this month.  Tallahassee Democrat
  • Rickards overcame a 27-point deficit to beat Godby 41—34 on Friday at Gene Cox Stadium as quarterback Jordan Kelley scored five touchdowns to spark a fourth-quarter comeback. Turnovers played a key role in shifting momentum after Godby led late in the game.  Tallahassee Democrat
  • Florida State football is preparing to face Alabama on Aug. 30 with an improved offense led by new quarterback Tommy Castellanos and coach Malzahn. The team still worries about its depth on the offensive line and in the defensive secondary—issues that may grow if injuries occur.  Tallahassee Democrat
