CRIME NEWS

  • Donna Adelson, 75, was accused of planning the murder of her former son-in-law Dan Markel during a tough custody fight, and the trial continued yesterday with police testimony and phone records linking her to the crime — a jury will soon decide her fate.  WCTV
  • Leon County Schools Superintendent Rocky Hanna is proposing metal detectors at high school entrances after three weapons-related arrests occurred on campus, with the school board set to review the plan on September 9—he said many students carry weapons for protection.  Tallahassee Democrat
  • In a Leon County courtroom, 75-year-old Donna Adelson faces trial for allegedly planning the 2014 murder of her ex-son-in-law Dan Markel—family members and convicted killers have testified about her role.  WFSU Public Media

  • Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce announced their engagement, and her 8 carat diamond ring was designed by FSU graduate Kindred Lubeck (estimated at $550,000). The ring was shown on social media and sparked local interest.  Tallahassee Democrat

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Lake Munson residents and advocates met on August 26 at Woodville Community Center with Leon County officials to discuss restoring the lake—officials highlighted a $291 million investment in 29 water quality projects while advocates like Max Epstein said they felt heard and are awaiting further commission motions to kick off the restoration.  Tallahassee Democrat

  • The Division of Administrative Hearings moved from its old Apalachee Parkway complex to a new 32,500-square-foot building in Southwood at 2001 Drayton Drive on July 1 — a move prompted after their lease expired — so its 44 judges and staff could work near key state offices.  Tallahassee Democrat

HEALTH NEWS

  • FSU College of Medicine welcomed Bonnie Spring as the new Krafft Professor of Behavioral and Social Medicine; she joined late last year after 19 years at Northwestern and brings over 30 years of research focused on reducing health-risk behaviors and improving rural public health. She will lead the Florida Blue Center for Rural Health Research and Policy and use digital tools like machine learning to develop scalable interventions—her pioneering work has been cited over 3,000 times.  Florida State University
