- ➤ At the final budget hearing on Tuesday, Sept. 9 at 6 p.m. in the Aquilina Howell building, the Leon County School Board approved its $647 million spending plan for the 2025-26 school year. The plan reduces the property tax rate from 5.384 mills to 5.366 mills — lowering the tax for a $200,000 home to about $1,073 while funding comes from state, federal, and local sources. - ➤ Florida State University College of Business kept its top spot among public schools for accounting and finance on Niche’s 2026 Best Colleges for Accounting and Finance in America list and came in third on the Best Colleges for Business list—earning high marks in Academics, Athletics, Professors and Student Life. - ➤ Florida State University will honor 15 outstanding alumni during Homecoming weekend from Oct. 31 to Nov. 2 with an Alumni Awards ceremony on Friday at Goodwood Museum and Gardens and a Homecoming Breakfast on Saturday to present the Grads Made Good Award. - ➤ Florida Gov. DeSantis announced on Sept. 8 that the state’s first-ever Second Amendment Sales Tax Holiday began to exempt sales taxes on qualifying hunting, fishing and camping supplies. The holiday will run until Dec. 31 and covers items such as firearms, ammunition and outdoor gear — a measure designed to help buyers keep more of their money. Tallahassee Democrat
- ➤ Attorneys for January and Jeffrey Littlejohn filed a petition urging the U.S. Supreme Court to review a Leon County school case over a 13-year-old student who was assigned new pronouns without the parents' knowledge—alleging that the school’s secret update of records violates parental rights. The petition, submitted last week, calls on the high court to resolve differing appellate interpretations of the shock-the-conscience test in similar cases. WFSU
