- ➤ Today, WCTV and the Tallahassee Animal Services Center launch Furry Friday—a program that spotlights dogs like Barney, Diamond, Antonio, and Holly who are ready for adoption and can be visited this weekend at the shelter across from Tom Brown Park on Easterwood Drive. Seven dogs have already been adopted and three have been moved to rescue efforts up north—visitors can also walk in Wednesday through Sunday from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. WCTV

- ➤ Golden Corral workers pulled a family from a car crash in Tallahassee — customers rushed to the scene to help and ensure the family's safety. WCTV

- ➤ Smalls Sliders dropped its converted shipping container restaurant on West Pensacola Street at West End Square in Tallahassee — the bright orange box was placed by a crane on Thursday and will open within 30 days. Tallahassee Democrat

- ➤ On Sept. 11, 2025, several HBCUs—including Alabama State, Hampton, Virginia State, Southern University, Bethune-Cookman and Spelman College—went into lockdown or advised caution and shifted to remote learning after terroristic threats, while Florida A&M in Tallahassee moved to online classes and the DNC also received a threat that Capitol Police later deemed not credible. - ➤ FSU will switch to a new myFSU portal in January for the spring semester — the change comes after student requests and work with ITS to make course registration, financial aid, and advising simpler. It will also end the use of Schedule Assistant for a system called Stellic — adding a faster class search tool to help students find classes quickly. FSU News

- ➤ Environmental advocates are suing Florida over water quality rules that have not been updated to meet federal standards after the process stalled under a past administration. Advocates say updating these rules is needed to protect clean water for drinking and to support local beaches, springs and fishing—key to public health and industry. WCTV
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Gov. DeSantis appointed Michael Beato as the new circuit judge for the Big Bend area on Sept. 12 — replacing the late Judge Dawn Caloca-Johnson who died in May. Beato, an attorney with Holtzman Vogel in Tallahassee and a member of The Federalist Society, will serve on the 2nd Circuit handling felony, juvenile and civil cases. Tallahassee Democrat
- ➤ After a state court ruled on Sept. 10 that Florida’s open carry ban was unconstitutional, sheriffs advised their deputies not to arrest people carrying guns openly; the ruling applies only to 32 north Florida counties and will take effect on Sept. 25—gun-free zones like schools and government buildings remain in force until legislative changes are made. - ➤ Leon County Commissioner Christian Caban proposed using Blueprint funds for new fire stations after opposing a 22% fire service fee hike imposed by the city—this plan differs from city commissioners’ preference to use the fee for a southside fire station. The board will meet on November 6 to explore how the Blueprint funds could help resolve the dispute. Tallahassee Democrat
- ➤ Tallahassee lawyer and retired administrative law judge John Newton died on September 8 at Tallahassee Memorial Healthcare after battling lung disease—he was 73 and admired for his generous public service that touched many lives. Tallahassee Democrat
