CULTURE NEWS

  • Tallahassee preservationist Althemese Barnes received the National Trust for Historic Preservation’s Louise du Pont Crowninshield Award on Tuesday, September 16 — the top honor for her work in creating the Florida African American Preservation Network and the John G. Riley Center and Museum. The award was presented at the PastForward conference in Milwaukee as one of eight National Preservation Awards for outstanding historic work.  Tallahassee Democrat

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Florida’s major auto insurers have reduced rates by an average of 6.5% this year after HB 837 was passed in 2023 to curb lawsuit abuse. State Farm lowered rates by over 10%—officials say that severe weather and inflation mean insurers will continue working to keep costs low.  Tallahassee Democrat

EDUCATION NEWS

  • TSC announced on Sept. 16 a new training course for dental assistants and hygienists to ease a state waitlist of 300 dental professionals— the course will begin Oct. 31 and TSC is now the only dental testing site in the Panhandle, which will help students avoid long drives for their exam.  Tallahassee Democrat
  • Rachel Ward Boatwright of Florida State University was named the Max Carraway Employee of the Year for her work as a senior academic advisor in the College of Music—she will receive two football tickets, a stipend, and a reserved parking space for one year. Her strong commitment and hands-on support for nearly 700 music students earned her the award.  Florida State University
  • Florida State University College of Law welcomed its 153 new Juris Doctor students this fall, setting a record with the highest median LSAT score and GPA in school history — a sign of the college's growing competitiveness. The class comes from 67 undergraduate institutions with students from 27 states and 12 international countries and includes recent graduates, professionals, parents, and more.  Florida State University

  • At a meeting on Sept. 17, Tallahassee city commissioners voted three to two to send a notice to Leon County to start looking for new fire service options—city leaders said billing issues and a strained budget drove the decision.  Tallahassee Democrat
  • Governor DeSantis is pushing to end child vaccination mandates as Florida Surgeon General Joseph Ladapo announced the department of health and legislature will repeal current requirements—Leon County school board members worry that ending the rule may raise infection risks in classrooms. The law, which requires vaccinations for school enrollment, has kept local immunization rates high, and officials remain uncertain about how schools will respond—raising concerns among community leaders.  Tallahassee Democrat

HEALTH NEWS

  • FSU chemist Wen Zhu earned a $2.1 million NIH grant to study how enzyme malfunctions contribute to disease—her lab will use the five-year award to research genetic mutations that may lead to new treatments.  Florida State University
  • FSU and TMH approved a historic agreement to create an academic health center in Tallahassee that will expand patient services and research opportunities while keeping community care central—FSU will work with the city to transfer hospital assets and establish a new 40-year lease arrangement for TMH. The partnership will expand specialized care and ensure current staff and charity care policies remain in place.  Tallahassee Reports

LIFESTYLE NEWS

  • Tallahassee's Lofty Pursuits celebrated its 32nd anniversary on Sept. 17 by expanding its menu to include new chocolate treats made after owner Greg Cohen took a five-day chocolate course at Penn State University (training with candy experts) and consulted candy technologists (to ensure top quality). The shop will offer these refined sweets in future holidays and keep delighting longtime customers.  Tallahassee Democrat

SPORTS NEWS

  • No. 9 FSU will host Kent State on Saturday at 3:30 p.m. at Doak Campbell Stadium—FSU is favored to win given its strong offense and Kent State’s weak defense.  Tallahassee Democrat
  • The Maclay Marauders are 4-0 after a come-from-behind overtime win over Valwood and are led by new coach Arie Slone, who said the team must be physical—he noted they are aiming to win the district and earn a home playoff game. The team has a bye week now and will face FAMU DRS next week.  WCTV
  • Jaylin Lucas, who missed all of 2024 due to an injury, returned for FSU this season and made a major impact with a 64—yard play in the season opener against Alabama on Aug. 30—helping secure a 31—17 win. He looks to boost his role as the team prepares for their Sept. 20 game against Kent State.  FSU News
