  • Florida State University researchers are studying distracted driving's risk and cost—data show that distracted drivers are three times more likely to cause fatal crashes and cost insurers about $577 extra per year. They found that banning handheld cellphones can lower insurance losses by 3% and cut premiums by 7.7%.  Florida State University

  • Expo Latino returns today from 10 a.m.—2 p.m. as an annual event celebrating Latin culture in Tallahassee for community members to enjoy.  WCTV

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Florida State University secured the No. 11 spot in Niche’s 2026 Top Public Universities rankings—climbing to No. 7 for Best Student Life and earning the top spot for Greek Life, with President Richard McCullough noting that the results reflect strong academics and a vibrant campus environment. The new rankings draw on extensive data from the U.S. Department of Education and student reviews.  Florida State University
  • Florida A&M University will unveil a 6 foot 7 inch bronze statue of former president Frederick S. Humphries on Oct 17 near Lee Hall during homecoming after a private fundraising effort raised $200,000 for the monument & his leadership from 1985 to 2001 expanded FAMU's enrollment and programs. The ceremony is expected to draw alumni and family to honor his lasting impact.  Tallahassee Democrat

  • The North Florida Wildlife Center welcomed a baby cotton-topped tamarin born earlier this month and said both the infant and its parents are healthy. Today the center is holding its 5th anniversary celebration from 9 am to 4 pm—featuring animal encounters and local vendors that support its work with endangered species.  WCTV
  • Bear Warriors United filed a lawsuit in Leon County, saying the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission broke legal rules and used outdated data in approving a 23-day bear hunt set to begin Dec.6 — the group contends the decision risks irreparable harm to the state’s black bears.  WFSU Public Media

  • Florida TaxWatch released a review today presenting five options for lawmakers to reform property taxes—such as phasing out taxes for homeowners and seniors, exempting school-ad valorem taxes, reducing tax rates, and enacting statutory changes to enhance transparency—and emphasizing the need to safeguard revenue for essential services before a House committee meets on Monday.  WFLA
  • During Wednesday's City Commission meeting, Tallahassee leaders voted to end the fire contract with Leon County—changing how firefighting is managed in the city.  WCTV

HEALTH NEWS

  • Football season at FSU has kicked off and students experienced heat illness symptoms such as high body temperature and fainting at a Sept 6 game when temperatures reached 93°F. The FSU Medical Response Unit urged students to stay hydrated and attend only registered tailgates—official events that follow strict risk management procedures to ensure safety.  FSU News
