COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Leadership Tallahassee will host its 30th Distinguished Leadership Awards on September 25 to honor community leaders for their work and to support the Youth Leadership Tallahassee program. The event will feature 9 finalists in three categories—Leadership pacesetter, Leader of the Year, and Servant Leadership— and aims to build future local leadership.  ABC 27
  • Leon County libraries are offering limited-edition cards that celebrate a world athletics event coming to Tallahassee—available while supplies last.  WCTV

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Tallahassee State College celebrated 50 years in its dental programs by partnering with the Florida Dental Association to launch new certification and award programs. The certification program will start October 31 and help dental assistants, hygienists, and dentists gain extra training—meeting the growing need for dental care.  WCTV

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Leon County Commissioner Brian Welch said he is dismayed by the city’s vote to end a fire services agreement that has served the community since 1988—this decision came after the city adopted a 10% fee increase for its residents. He remains hopeful a shared partnership will be restored as the county and city address concerns over funding and oversight—official dispute resolution is ongoing.  Tallahassee Democrat
  • Leon County Children’s Services Council served 126,000 families with $22.5M in taxpayer funds since 2021—its report shows that programs helped lower suicide rates, domestic violence incidents and low birth weight babies while kindergarten readiness, juvenile crime and child food insecurity remain challenges. The council will request a $9M boost from a proposed property tax increase at a public hearing on Sept. 25.  Tallahassee Democrat
  • City commissioners voted on September 17th to order a second appraisal of the Capital City Country Club land because the club's private owners want full ownership to make improvements & attract investors including a partnership with Florida A&M University's golf team. Neighbors raised concerns about protecting unmarked graves on the property, and city leaders said no sale will occur until a commemoration plan is in place.  ABC 27
  • City Commission Seat 3 candidate PJ Perez held his campaign launch party on September 21 and said he was unhappy with Tallahassee’s growth trends and Mayor John Dailey supporting Talethia Edwards. He argued that money should improve community centers instead of fueling urban sprawl—his event was introduced by Ryan Ray with City Commissioner Jack Porter in attendance.  WFSU

SPORTS NEWS

  • Wrianna Hudson scored a last-second equalizer with 33 seconds left on September 21 to tie the game 1-1 between No. 7 Florida State and NC State at Dail Soccer Field in Raleigh—ensuring the undefeated Seminoles will next play Miami on Oct. 3 at the Seminole Soccer Complex.  Tallahassee Democrat
  • Florida State football moved up from No.9 to No.8 in the US LBM Coaches Poll after a 66-10 win over Kent State. The Seminoles are 3-0 and will face UVA Friday at 7 p.m.—their first road test at Scott Stadium.  Tallahassee Democrat
  • FSU football defensive coordinator Tony White said on Sept 21 he was not contacted about any head coaching job and called his role a great privilege—he dismissed coaching rumors—while he prepares to face Virginia on Sept 26 on ESPN.  Tallahassee Democrat
  • FSU football freshman Micahi Danzy (a Tallahassee native) scored multiple touchdowns in his first three games, recording 112 receiving yards and a 64-yard touchdown on a reverse play. Coach Mike Norvell (who praised Danzy’s work ethic) said he will build on his early success as FSU prepares for the ACC game against Virginia on Sept. 26.  Tallahassee Democrat
