COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The City of Tallahassee announced the 19th Annual Puppies in the Pool event will be held October 11th—12th from 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. at Trousdell Aquatics Center for dogs 6 months and older. Dog owners must show current health information for each pet and pre-registration is encouraged due to limited space.  ABC 27
  • A vibrant mural named 'Good Things Grow Here' will be unveiled near Cascades Park at 10 a.m. on Sept. 27 by the Knight Creative Communities Institute to brighten the area after painted crosswalks were lost. Local teacher and artist Andy Steinbrink painted the work based on Grace Shepherd's idea and visitors can use sidewalk chalk near Argonaut Coffee — adding a creative touch to the community space.  Tallahassee Democrat

BUSINESS NEWS

  • United Launch Alliance will launch its Atlas V rocket carrying Amazon Project Kuiper satellites today at 8:09 a.m. ET from Cape Canaveral Space Force Station & people in Tallahassee may see the rocket if weather remains clear.  Tallahassee Democrat

CULTURE NEWS

  • Mary Ann Lindley, a former journalist and Leon County Commissioner, has drawn on over 30 years of work to write her book Fragments: Then & Now, which weaves past columns with current insights on Florida life and community. She will launch the book with events starting Saturday, Oct. 4 at Midtown Reader—additional readings and signings are scheduled at Word Garden on Oct. 5, Hearth & Soul Home Décor on Oct. 16, and Goodwood Museum and Gardens on Nov. 6.  Tallahassee Democrat
  • The Tallahassee Film Festival will run Sept. 26-28 with 80 films over three days at several downtown venues including Challenger Learning Center—families and film fans will enjoy new independent movies, cult classics, food trucks, and outdoor shows. EDUCATION NEWS

  • Florida State University's College of Nursing received a historic $10 million donation from The Fairholme Foundation to create scholarships for local students and support faculty research on aging populations. The gift will expand its undergraduate nursing program at the Panama City campus to address the regional shortage—improving health care education in our community.  Tallahassee Democrat
  • The latest U.S. News and World Report rankings show FSU improved to No.51 overall, up three spots, and No.21 among public schools—while FAMU stayed the nation's top public HBCU at No.1 for the 7th year. FSU President Richard McCullough and FAMU President Marva Johnson said their focus on academic excellence and research drove the improvements.  WFSU
  • Leon County School Board chair Laurie Lawson Cox defended the district's pay practices at a state meeting on Sept. 24—blaming the teachers union for delaying raises, while the union said it represents its teachers and is negotiating for more funds ahead of an Oct. 1 deadline.  Tallahassee Democrat
  • Florida State University Department of Physics will host free Saturday Morning Physics sessions this fall that let community members learn about stars and rockets through hands-on activities—beginning Sept. 27 in Room 101 of the Richards Building and including visits to local research labs on Oct. 4 and later dates. The sessions last about an hour and are designed to explain science in simple terms for all ages.  Florida State University

SPORTS NEWS

  • Florida A&M football will host Alabama State at 3 p.m. on Saturday at Bragg Memorial Stadium— the game will air on HBCU GO as both teams aim to gain momentum after their bye week. Alabama State is favored to win as their strong offense and defense back their predicted edge.  Tallahassee Democrat
  • Willie Simmons, the former FAMU coach who led his team to a national championship, returned to Tallahassee on Tuesday as the keynote speaker at the Tallahassee Quarterback Club before taking the FIU head coaching job. He discussed modern college football challenges like keeping players amid the transfer portal and NIL rules—while stressing his deep ties to the city.  Tallahassee Democrat
  • Leon County high school volleyball teams were ranked by MaxPreps using records and schedule updates through September 21 — Chiles remains first at a record of 18-1 after a recent loss, while Florida High is placed second and will face Blountstown today. Leon is ranked third and is set to play top teams in upcoming matches.  Tallahassee Reports
  • Florida State coach Mike Norvell, who worked with Virginia QB Chandler Morris's father, said his defense will pressure Morris—who has thrown 1,050 yards and eight touchdowns this season—in the upcoming road game tomorrow at Virginia, with defensive lineman Darrell Jackson aiming to bring him down.  Tallahassee Democrat
