ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • The National Hurricane Center is tracking Hurricane Gabrielle in the Atlantic, Tropical Storm Humberto expected to become a major hurricane, and Invest 94L which may soon become a tropical depression as the storms interact via the Fujiwhara effect. • City staff released an agenda that shows a new plan between Tallahassee Memorial HealthCare and Florida State University to turn the hospital into an academic center—two commissioners worry that FSU and state leaders may soon control the hospital. The document says the plan will boost local health care and create jobs while a city meeting will decide the hospital's future.  Tallahassee Democrat
  • City leaders will consider a plan to create an academic health center that links FSU with Tallahassee Memorial Healthcare at the October 1 commission meeting—when the City, owner of TMH, will review the idea. The plan will slowly change TMH to FSU Health and add a new $134 million research building for labs and a family clinic.  WFSU Public Media
  • Florida’s open carry law went into effect yesterday after a court ruling struck down the 1987 ban on visibly carrying firearms—allowing law-abiding citizens to carry guns while state and federal restrictions remain in force. SPORTS NEWS

  • Florida State football plays Virginia today at Scott Stadium at 7 p.m.—the Seminoles, riding a top-ranked offense and a strong 15-4 series record, are predicted to win 42–27 as they face a Cavaliers team known for explosive plays.
