EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ Hannah Haugen of Lincoln High School was named Teacher of the Month by WCTV and Envision Credit Union—she was recognized for her dedication and impact in the classroom. WCTV
- ➤ On Sept. 23, 2025, FSU’s SGA held its State of the Student Body Address in the Student Union Ballrooms with about 100 attendees hearing speakers from seven student groups discuss athletic wins, new programs, and campus safety improvements after an April mass shooting—showing plans for a brighter campus future. - ➤ Florida State University is offering new housing for students in the DC Study Away Program in Capitol Hill to support internships in Washington, D.C. The fully furnished residences with free utilities and on-site help will be available starting January 2026 — this program connects students directly to career opportunities. Florida State University
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Twenty-five cities and counties filed a lawsuit on Monday in Leon County court against a new state law that stops local governments from making stricter changes to growth plans until Oct.1, 2027 — the suit claims the law hurts local control and freezes land rules needed for home rule. - ➤ Florida House member Allison Tant launched her final campaign at Food Glorious Food in Midtown on Monday after winning her seat in November 2020 — she is ending her service due to term limits. City Commissioner Jeremy Matlow started his 2026 run at Proof Brewing Company on Saturday and said Tallahassee should be run by everyone rather than by rich people, while Bernard Stevens filed for City Commission Seat 5 on September 5 to run against Dianne Williams-Cox. - ➤ Florida State University and Tallahassee Memorial HealthCare are proposing an academic health center to expand medical training, research and patient care in our area—this plan will let local patients receive specialized treatment without traveling to other cities and is expected to boost local economic growth. - ➤ Florida A&M University announced that its football game against Mississippi Valley State will be moved to November 29 at 2 p.m.—now held in Itta Bena instead of at Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta. WCTV
