EDUCATION NEWS

  • Florida State University hosted Google today for a full day of hands-on training on Landis Green, where students, faculty and staff explored the Gemini AI assistant and NotebookLM through interactive demos and workshops + the university will integrate these tools into future classes to support safe use of innovative technology.  Florida State University
  • Florida A&M University President Marva Johnson appointed Marcus Burgess as the inaugural senior vice president of Enterprise Partnerships and Innovation—he began his role on Sept. 29 to lead efforts that build corporate, public and philanthropic partnerships as part of her 100-day plan.  Tallahassee Democrat
  • Florida State University has Caribbean student organizations that help students keep their culture alive by hosting events with food, language and music—these groups give first-generation and international students a home away from home on campus. The clubs also teach skills like planning and working with peers while preserving heritage through community events.  FSU News
  • FSU College of Law graduates scored an 88.5% first-time pass rate on the July Bar Exam, up 1.3% from 2024—this result comes as the college names Jami Ferrell the new Director of Bar Success to guide exam preparation. Ferrell brings over 20 years of legal experience and will lead efforts as the college adjusts its teaching for upcoming exam changes.  Florida State University

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Local agencies are watching a federal government shutdown that may affect worker pay and public services, including courts and prisons. Courts will operate until Oct. 17 and the airport reports normal service—concerns remain about full employee pay.  WCTV
  • Today Florida put into effect more than 20 new laws that include making child sex trafficking punishable by execution and raising penalties for sexual cyber harassment and luring children — Senate Bill 1804 makes sex trafficking for children under 12 and those who are mentally incapacitated a capital crime. House Bill 777 now makes sexual cyber harassment a felony and upgrades the charge for luring children under 14 to a third-degree felony.  WCTV
  • The City Commission met today to discuss a deal where FSU would take control of Tallahassee Memorial HealthCare’s city-owned assets to form an academic medical center — the meeting served as an information session with public input and will be followed by another hearing on Oct. 22 at 6 p.m.  Tallahassee Democrat
