CULTURE NEWS

  • Today, Theatre Tallahassee presents 'The Revolutionists' at 8 p.m. in its Studio, a lively play that brings history to life with strong characters (including Olympe de Gouges and Marie Antoinette) and a blend of humor and drama. The production runs until Oct.19 and includes additional shows on Oct.5.  Tallahassee Democrat
  • Tallahassee is buzzing with fun events this weekend as actor Morgan Freeman leads the Symphonic Blues Experience today at FSU’s Ruby Diamond Concert Hall—tickets are $115 and $80, while the Downtown GetDown pre-game party on Adams Street features live local music. Jazz at Maclay Gardens on Sunday, a mystery show at Theatre TSC, and country music by Kendell Marvel on Tuesday will add more options for fans.  Tallahassee Democrat

EDUCATION NEWS

  • School Board Chair Laurie Lawson Cox spoke at the state board meeting about teacher salary increases—she outlined her negotiations with the teacher's union. Education officials and union leaders will review her proposals as they plan upcoming steps.  Tallahassee Democrat
  • Actress Elizabeth Gillies appeared at FSU's Ruby Diamond Concert Hall on Sept. 30 to share life advice and humor during the first Golden Torch Lecture Series of the year—students asked her about her start on Broadway, her role on Victorious, and her transition to adult roles on Dynasty.  FSU News
  • Florida State University’s Landis Green recently hosted branded pop-ups—Google, Shein, Clinique and others—to give free products and interactive activities for students. The event built campus buzz and raised ethical questions, and Google’s free Gemini AI program will be available to students this fall.  FSU News
  • Leon teachers reached a tentative agreement with the district to raise their bi-weekly pay by about $40 using state funds only—teachers still must vote to ratify the deal. Many educators worry the raise may not cover rising health insurance costs.  Tallahassee Democrat

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • In September, Tallahassee recorded its third driest month on record as drought conditions worsened across North Florida and South Georgia—severe drought affected communities like Donalsonville and Tallahassee while a slight chance of rain is forecast to help ease the dryness later.  WCTV

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • A federal shutdown is delaying the Homeownership Development Program funds in Leon County and pushing back new affordable housing projects as builders face higher costs and families like single mom Kem Walker see their plans on hold until at least November—causing uncertainty in the market.  ABC 27
  • The state appeals court ruled that police could not search vehicles based solely on a cannabis smell — it reversed an earlier decision and followed changes in marijuana laws. The ruling did not affect the Hillsborough County case involving Darrielle Ortiz Williams — the court also certified a question for the state Supreme Court to review.  Tallahassee Reports

  • Capital Health Plan hosted a wellness fair at its Nancy Van Vessem Center For Healthy Aging on Oct. 1 to help residents connect with trusted care resources—Chief Medical Officer Dr. Lynn Jones urged them to find a primary care doctor to avoid false online information.  WFSU

SPORTS NEWS

  • The Chiles volleyball team defeated the Leon lions on Oct. 1st by winning in straight sets—25—17, 25—19, and 25—14—snapping Leon’s five-game win streak and reaching 21 wins this season; they will play Mosley away on Oct. 7th at 6:00 p.m.  Tallahassee Reports
  • FSU will play Miami on Saturday at Doak Campbell Stadium at 7:30 p.m. as the Seminoles try to bounce back from last Friday’s loss while key Hurricane players—Carson Beck, Mark Fletcher Jr., Reuben Bain and Akheem Mesidor—set the stage for a game that could change the ACC playoff picture.  Tallahassee Democrat
