- ➤ VyStar Credit Union and Ronald McDonald House are hosting a Teddy Bear Drive from October 6th–24th to collect new bears for families staying at the Ronald McDonald House. Community members can drop off bears at any branch while following guidelines that avoid items like buttons or plastic parts. ABC 27
- ➤ At Independence Landing, adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities join a culinary workforce program that trains 22 paid trainees from Leon County Schools during National Disability Employment Awareness Month. Led by Executive Chef Nikki Pettineo, the program has produced a 37% community employment rate+ above the national average and builds essential job skills for independence. Tallahassee Democrat
- ➤ The 3rd Annual St. Marks Crafts & Drafts Brewfest will happen on Saturday, Oct. 25 at 815 Port Leon Drive and will have more than 30 breweries and many food vendors, including seven food trucks, a donut truck and local oysters. Organizer Erin Farmer said the event will add a VIP hour, new spirits and a college football lounge to help raise funds for waterfront improvements—sponsored by Tallahassee Ford. Tallahassee Democrat

- ➤ The Leon County Sheriff’s Office report shows a 38.3% increase in high school arrests from last year—Leon High School reported 36 arrests and Rickards saw 17, while the other schools recorded slightly lower totals. Tallahassee Reports

- ➤ Tallahassee's artistic crosswalks were removed after Florida banned street art on public roads and sidewalks for safety—local groups are now promoting beautification through new murals and placemaking projects. WFSU Public Media
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ On Oct. 3, FSU students from the College of Music, Fine Arts, and Motion Picture Arts attended a guest lecture with executive producer Eric Meier, conductor Martin Gellner, and blues musician Keith Johnson to learn how creative ideas become large shows—an event tied to Morgan Freeman’s Symphonic Blues Experience. The students later saw an evening performance with narration by Morgan Freeman and live music from a blues band and the Tallahassee Symphony Orchestra. Florida State University
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ On September 23, the County Commissioners held a meeting to review seven potential charter amendments—selecting two for further review by the Citizen Charter Review Committee and directing staff to fix conflicting language with Florida Statutes. Some commissioners worried that giving the County more rule power over City ordinances might upset the current balance, while others supported the change. Tallahassee Reports
- ➤ City Commissioner Jeremy Matlow launched his 2026 mayoral campaign at a fundraiser at Proof Brewing Company on Sept. 27—where he promised affordable housing, lower utility costs, and more investment in local arts and live music if elected. He announced his bid on Aug. 11 and follows Mayor Dailey’s decision not to seek re-election, aiming to boost working-class and student neighborhoods. FSU News
- ➤ A lawsuit was filed in Leon County circuit court by 1000 Friends of Florida and an Orange County resident to challenge Florida's new growth law SB 180 that froze local land-development rules and comprehensive plans through Oct. 1, 2027. The suit claims the law is arbitrary and violates due process and single-subject rules—alleging it has hurt local planning by blocking plan amendments that would address issues like crowded roads and flooding. - ➤ Florida A&M will host North Carolina Central tomorrow at Ken Riley Field at Bragg Memorial Stadium with kickoff at 3 p.m., as the Rattlers face uncertainty at quarterback while the Eagles build on a three-game winning streak led by top running back Chris Mosley. The game will air on HBCU GO & 96.1 JAMZ, and the official score prediction is 45-28 in favor of the Eagles. Tallahassee Democrat
- ➤ On Oct. 3 and Oct. 4, Bishop Kenny High School hosted a two-day JV volleyball tournament where Chiles went undefeated and beat Bishop Kenny JV in the finals to win the trophy—bringing the win back to Tallahassee. - ➤ The Panthers will play FSU tomorrow at noon at Doak S. Campbell Stadium in a critical road game as Pitt seeks to build on its strong win over Boston College — led by redshirt freshman Mason Heintschel’s breakout performance.
