  • Pulitzer-winning author Gilbert King will host a book tour for his new work Bone Valley at FSU College of Law—co-hosted by Midtown Reader bookstore—at 7 p.m. Oct.15, where he will discuss the wrongful conviction of Leo Schofield with law professor Erika Nyborg-Burch.  Tallahassee Democrat
  • Tallahassee teen Corrin Hobbs, crowned Miss Juneteenth Florida on August 2nd in Tampa, is set to compete for the national title today in Galveston—she aims to bring the crown home with the support of her community while balancing school and local service efforts. EDUCATION NEWS

  • Florida A&M University has partnered with Metropolitan College of New York to offer business graduates a pathway to a master’s in supply chain management at FAMU—this new program will include fee waivers, specialized advising and financial support to help students advance.  Tallahassee Democrat

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • City officials and Capital City Country Club said the club will use 180 acres of city land solely for its golf course purposes—no other development is planned if the sale is approved. Neighborhood associations worry the deal may lead to future development and will hold a webinar on Oct. 12 to discuss their concerns.  Tallahassee Democrat
  • FAMU's Board of Trustees met yesterday at 5:00 p.m. — the meeting focused on a proposal to add three FAMU representatives to the academic health center's governing board, which would change the deal between FSU and Tallahassee Memorial HealthCare. City commissioners will consider the proposal at a public hearing on October 22 as supporters say the change may upend the existing agreement.  Tallahassee Democrat
  • SNAP benefits for October remain available in Florida and the White House has pledged to keep WIC operating with tariff money during the ongoing government shutdown—if the shutdown extends past mid-October, reserve funds may be used for SNAP and some WIC agencies could face temporary service changes. Nearly 3 million Floridians depend on these programs, so officials advise families to check with state agencies and continue using their benefits.  WFSU Public Media
