COMMUNITY NEWS

  • On October 12, about 1,000 residents gathered for Tallahassee's Longest Table event to celebrate the city's All-America City title while enjoying complimentary dinner from Habana’s Boardwalk Cuban Restaurant, Hayward House, JoEllen’s, Luxe Catering and Tastebudz. Tables were set along Duval Street from West Jefferson to St. Augustine—providing a space for conversation and shared celebration.  Tallahassee Democrat

CULTURE NEWS

  • Florida A&M University has kicked off its Homecoming week with a Coronation Ball and movie night while planning concerts, food events, and parades to lead up to the 4 p.m. football game against Alcorn State on Oct 18—activities include a Taste of a Rattler on Oct 16, FAMFEST and a T-Pain block party on Oct 17. Students will enjoy a Greek step show and a gospel concert on Oct 19—continuing the week’s festive spirit.  Tallahassee Democrat

EDUCATION NEWS

  • FSU will hold its 2025 Homecoming events from Oct. 24th to Nov. 1st with live performances, student celebrations, and a pep rally headlined by Mariah the Scientist. The festivities will end with the Homecoming Game at Doak S. Campbell Stadium and include themed events that honor FSU traditions and its ties to the Seminole Tribe—emphasizing legacy in every frame.  FSU News
  • Florida State University will host its third annual Discovery Days from Oct. 18 to 25 with over 25 events including a pitch competition styled like Shark Tank and a STEM career panel. The week will also open IGNITE Tallahassee, a new startup incubator, and launch projects such as ICON Health to boost nutrition policy (more details will follow).  Florida State University

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • City and county officials met on Oct. 13 at the Smith-Williams Service Center to address Tallahassee's affordable housing crisis and review updates on programs like down payment assistance and foreclosure prevention. Officials highlighted new apartment complexes such as Columbia Gardens at South City and Lake Bradford Apartments and will meet later this year to review their recommendations.  Tallahassee Democrat
  • Florida State House Rep Peggy Gossett-Seidman reintroduced House Bill 49 on Sept. 29 to limit partisan speech on college campuses but withdrew the measure on Oct. 3 after student groups mobilized strong opposition—over 1,000 calls were made in one week. Students labeled the bill as 'deplorable' and strongly opposed its restrictions on campaign activities.  FSU News

HEALTH NEWS

  • Florida State University has named Jeremy Slaga as its first Vice President and Chief Clinical Operations Officer for FSU Health. The FSU alumnus—who worked at Temple Health and other healthcare organizations—will begin his new role on January 5 to expand clinical and research opportunities across the state.  Florida State University

SPORTS NEWS

  • Mason Heintschel threw 321 yards and two touchdowns as Pittsburgh upset No. 25 Florida State 34+31 in Tallahassee on Oct. 11. Desmond Reid made eight catches for 155 yards while Florida State’s Tommy Castellanos threw two touchdowns before key turnovers cost the Seminoles the game.  ABC 27
  • Doak Campbell Stadium renovations will be completed before the Florida State game against Alabama so the facility is ready for use.  Tallahassee Democrat
  • Florida State football released its depth chart ahead of its game at Stanford on Saturday, Oct. 18 at 10:30 p.m. on ESPN showing defensive adjustments as three players—James Williams, Darryll Desir, and Amaree Williams—are listed as potential starters while injured linebacker Stefon Thompson is omitted; the chart also lists players returning from injury after a loss to Pitt.  Tallahassee Democrat
  • FAMU football will host Alcorn State on Oct 18 at 4 p.m. at Ken Riley Field at Bragg Memorial Stadium as the team seeks to end a two-game home losing streak—coach James Colzie said a win is key to regaining fan support.  Tallahassee Democrat
