COMMUNITY NEWS

  • T-Pain will host his free block party on T-Pain Lane at the Walker Ford Community Center Friday, Oct. 17 from 2 p.m.—6 p.m. The event will feature local food vendors serving barbecue, savory dishes and sweet treats as part of his 20-year celebration.  Tallahassee Democrat
  • Amicus Brewing Ventures will celebrate its 2-year anniversary on Saturday, Oct. 18 with live music and seven new beer releases at its restored Old City Waterworks building on Gadsden St.—Food trucks and special items will be available to mark the event.  Tallahassee Democrat

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Organizers for the Tallahassee Flea Market reboot said the new site at 4721 Capital Circle Southwest is delayed due to permit issues — county officials explained the area is not zoned for retail use. Officials are reviewing a possible alternative at 5881 W. Tennessee Street where retail use is allowed, and vendors should await further updates.  Tallahassee Democrat

  • Florida State University mourns Nancy Dedman, a civic leader and philanthropist who died Oct. 8 at age 97—her gifts transformed the school’s hospitality program. A celebration of her life is held today at 3 p.m. at Highland Park United Methodist Church in Dallas.  Florida State University
  • Springwood Elementary in Tallahassee is hosting a party to reward student achievement as part of this month’s Community Classroom series — the event marks a commitment to celebrating academic success.  WCTV
  • Leon County teachers rejected a $40 monthly raise offer that would have given them about $400 to $500 per year after 833 of 1,141 votes turned it down on Oct. 14. They must now return to bargaining with district leaders who say they lack extra funds and warn that a failure to reach a new deal may force an impasse — affecting future salary increases.  Tallahassee Democrat
  • FSU reinstated its Heads Up pedestrian safety campaign this fall to address growing traffic dangers near campus amid a series of pedestrian incidents that saw 15 students injured and two fatalities, with local hit-and-run crashes under investigation. The FSU Police—working with student groups—urge drivers and pedestrians to stay alert to help reduce collisions and near misses.  FSU News
  • Lively Technical College and Leon County Schools have opened a new welding facility at Chiles High School with a $631,000 grant from the Florida Department of Education — the 1,838 sq. ft. facility enrolled its first 51 students for hands-on welding training.   • At Tuesday’s school board meeting, Superintendent Rocky Hanna pledged to review school finances and operations before the end of the year after board member Alva Smith argued that low-capacity schools were hurting funding—Smith said she now feels her concerns are being heard.  Tallahassee Reports
  • Eren Ozguven, director of FSU’s RIDER Center, leads research to help Florida communities prepare for hurricanes, floods, and other disasters—his team uses GIS analysis and virtual reality tools to design smarter emergency response plans while partnering with local agencies.   • A new report from WorldAtlas names the five Florida lakes where snakes are most common — including the Everglades, Lake Okeechobee, Lake Seminole near Tallahassee, Lake Iamonia and Lake Talquin — to help residents stay alert while enjoying the cooler weather outdoors. The report explains that native, invasive and venomous snakes thrive in these natural habitats and advises caution when exploring these areas.  Tallahassee Democrat

  • Community Christian's volleyball team finished the regular season with a record of 21-6, setting a new school record under new coach Jacob Stringer. The Chargers are ranked 17 statewide and will begin the district tournament today at 5:00 p.m. against L.E.A.D Academy.  Tallahassee Reports
  • Florida State will face Stanford on Saturday at 10:30 p.m. ET in a conference game broadcast on ESPN — the Seminoles hope to bounce back after recent losses while Stanford aims to gain momentum this season.  Tallahassee Democrat
  • FAMU football has started 1-4 and must win its seven remaining conference games to reach the SWAC Championship and Celebration Bowl—losing to Alcorn State on Saturday at 4 p.m. could end their hopes—so the team must play better.  Tallahassee Democrat
  • FSU softball opened its fall exhibition schedule with a 12-2 win over Northwest Florida State College on Oct 10 at JoAnne Graf Field, showcasing a deep pitching staff and testing new players at catcher and second. The team will face Tallahassee State College today and Gulf Coast State College on Oct 17—coaches say fresh talent will help the squad grow.  FSU News
