COMMUNITY NEWS

  • On Oct 12, The Longest Table returned to downtown Tallahassee where over 1,000 residents gathered around a long table across Duval and Pensacola streets to share a meal and discuss the city's future. City officials and community leaders praised the event for uniting diverse voices — though some noted that few local students joined.  FSU News

CULTURE NEWS

  • FSU's Hispanic Graduate Student Association and the Askew Student Life Center organized a five-week film festival called Cinehassee for Hispanic Heritage Month that showed movies about migration and cultural integration. The festival featured films (Guarani, La Cocina, Chinas, a Second Generation Story, Carajita, and Home is Somewhere Else) and sparked discussions on economic and cultural divides.  FSU News

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Florida's minimum wage increased from $13 to $14 per hour on Sept. 30 — a change set by Amendment 2 that will raise wages yearly until they reach $15 on Sept. 30 — reflecting rising living costs. Local college students at FSU — many of whom work in College Town — said the raise helped manage their expenses, while experts warned it might lead to job cuts and higher prices for local businesses.  FSU News

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Florida A&M University’s band rehearsal hall for the Marching 100 was renamed on Thursday to honor alumni Bernard and Shirley Kinsey—who were recognized for preserving African American history and supporting education and the arts. They also received honorary doctorates from the university.  WCTV
  • FSU hired healthcare executive Jeremy Slaga as its first vice president and chief clinical operations officer to help lead efforts to form an academic health center. He is set to begin on Jan. 5 and will work with university officials to advance plans to buy TMH—pending city approval for the transfer of hospital property and assets.  Tallahassee Democrat
  • FSU professor Meredith McQuerry was named to the Influential Women 2025 series for her work in developing better firefighting PPE for women. She has led projects with nearly $4 million in funding, including $2 million from FEMA, to improve safety for first responders, athletes, and industrial workers.  Florida State University

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Leon County will close roads near Washington Square from Oct. 20 through Oct. 22 at night for repair work — detours will be in place on Calhoun and Gadsden, and further closures for resurfacing will run from Oct. 23 through late November during day and night hours.  Tallahassee Democrat
  • Florida State University's DeVoe L. Moore Center, in collaboration with the Florida Policy Project and Reason Foundation, has launched the Florida Housing Data Project website that offers local housing trend data for 30 counties and shows a shortage of over 120,000 homes. The interactive map helps residents and policymakers track gaps in single-family and rental units—information that will guide future policy changes.  Florida State University
  • Leon County officials hosted an open house on Tuesday in Woodville to gather local input for community improvements — one of two sessions offered by county leaders.  WCTV
  • A Catholic bishop from the diocese said he stands with immigrants as state leaders will open a new detention facility called the Panhandle Pokey. Bishop Bill Wack urged local parishioners to welcome immigrants and said he will provide pastoral care to those detained—state officials have not yet commented.  Tallahassee Democrat

  • Florida State athletes honor Seminole heritage by wearing turquoise jerseys and continuing the Osceola and Renegade tradition during games. The Seminole Tribe works with the university to ensure that its name and imagery are used respectfully—showing a clear commitment to history and unity.  FSU News
  • Madison County will face Florida High at Boot Hill as part of week 10 of their high school football season—both teams are preparing for a competitive game.  WCTV
