CULTURE NEWS

  • Florida A&M University held its sold-out Homecoming concert on Oct. 16 at Al Lawson Center, drawing thousands of students, alumni and local fans to see hip-hop and R&B stars including Latto, PartyNextDoor, Boosie, G Herbo and Bossman Dlow. The event featured strong stage effects and lively dancers that made the night a memorable celebration of music.  Tallahassee Democrat
  • FSU Hillel and nearly 90 students celebrated Sukkot on Oct. 10 by gathering near the main quad in a community Sukkah created by students (from FSU’s first Sukkah Design Sprint) and praying for the hostages following the recent exchange. Campus security and administration helped keep the area safe (with support from key donors) during the event.  Tallahassee Democrat

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Florida State University physicist Zhengguang Lu earned the prestigious William L. McMillan Award for early-career researchers after discovering a fractional anomalous quantum Hall effect in multilayer graphene materials—a breakthrough showing electrons split into fractions under special conditions. Lu, the first FSU scholar to receive the honor, will join MIT’s Jaiqi Cai to present their research at the University of Illinois next month—marking a promising advance in quantum studies.  Florida State University

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • FSU researchers led by Joel Trexler and Kellie Keys are studying Wakulla Springs to find how human actions may affect water clarity and the safety of our drinking water. The team is using environmental communication to show the public the link between science and water health and will share their findings on Oct. 21 in Norway — connecting research and community awareness.  FSU News

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • A proposed partnership between Tallahassee Memorial Healthcare and FSU to create an academic medical center is raising concerns as the 9-8 board split may not secure strong community representation. FAMU is asking for board seats to honor its historic service while city commissioners may soon influence the final governance structure—local leaders seek a balance that reflects community needs.  Tallahassee Democrat

HEALTH NEWS

  • Florida State University and community partners will host a health and wellness fair today at the Wakulla County Community Center in Crawfordville from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.—the event will have over 70 booths, health presentations and food trucks to offer local resources.  WFSU

LIFESTYLE NEWS

  • Tallahassee's downtown rooftop bar Charlie Park is on the eighth floor of the AC Hotel by Marriott and offers fancy drinks with pretty views over Cascades Park—giving locals a fresh choice from busy student spots. The bar changes its drink menu twice a year and holds happy hours and cocktail classes for a fun, relaxed night out.  FSU News

  • Florida A&M will host Alcorn State in a homecoming football game today at 4 p.m. on Ken Riley Field at Bragg Memorial Stadium — both teams seek their first SWAC win as key players Kenari Wilcher and JaCorian Sewell drive the action with a predicted score of FAMU 24, Alcorn State 14.  Tallahassee Democrat
  • Florida State will face Stanford today at 10:30 p.m. on ESPN but will miss starting cornerback Ja'Bril Rawls—he is a key player whose absence adds to the team's challenges. Wide receiver Duce Robinson and offensive tackle Micah Pettus are also questionable as the Seminoles try to break a three-game losing streak.  Tallahassee Democrat
  • Florida State men's basketball lost to Alabama 109-105 in an exhibition game held at Boutwell Auditorium in Birmingham on Oct. 16 — senior guard Robert McCray V led with 26 points while teammates Lajae Jones and Chauncey Wiggins recorded double-doubles, and the team will face Florida A&M at Tucker Center on Oct. 26.  Tallahassee Democrat
