ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • A hay fire in Seminole County started after an illegal burn, volunteer fire rescue said — they warned residents not to burn outdoors because of drought conditions in southwest Georgia — to help prevent further risk.  WCTV

EDUCATION NEWS

  • During FAMU homecoming week, the university celebrated by renaming its Band Rehearsal Hall in honor of Bernard & Shirley Kinsey with speeches from President Marva Johnson and Mathew Knowles, while T-Pain hosted a block party on T-Pain Lane that featured food trucks, bounce houses, and a live music vote awarding local performer Jakyla Brione the opening spot for his concert later that night.  WFSU
  • Leon County Schools has seen enrollment drop, tight budgets and low teacher morale. At an Oct. 14 meeting, board member Alva Smith proposed consolidating under-enrolled schools while urging leaders to learn why families are leaving before raising taxes further— a wake-up call for the system.  Tallahassee Democrat

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Foresters reported a rise in pine tree deaths in an area from Tallahassee to Thomasville, east to Valdosta and south to Steinhatchee—damage that began after hurricanes and a hot, dry September weakened the trees. Experts said weakened trees became targets for beetle attacks—causing rapid die-offs in the affected forests.  Tallahassee Democrat

  • Women at FSU campus are building inclusive fitness communities through Girl Gaines and CHAARG to ease gym intimidation for women. The groups offer scheduled workouts and gym buddy programs that teach proper exercise techniques — boosting confidence and physical health.  FSU News

SPORTS NEWS

  • FAMU football ended a two-game losing streak with a homecoming win over Alcorn State on Oct 18 by finishing 33-25—quarterback RJ Johnson III threw for 323 yards and two touchdowns. Coach James Colzie III said the win helped restore team confidence as the Rattlers prepare for upcoming SWAC games.  Tallahassee Democrat
  • Florida State University students competed in an inclusive goalball tournament at Tully Gym on Sunday to boost disability awareness, with Olympian Norris Coster leading a demonstration. The University of Choice Initiative hosts a guest speaker event with disability rights activist Tiffany Yu today at 7 p.m. in Moore Auditorium.  WCTV
  • Florida State lost to Stanford 20-13 on Oct 18 as penalties and missed chances led to its fourth straight defeat in ACC play. The team will work on discipline ahead of its Homecoming game against Wake Forest on Nov 1.  FSU News
