- ➤ Annie Johnson is asking locals to donate turkeys, canned goods, desserts, drinks, and fixings to support her nonprofit's Frenchtown Thanksgiving Feast as more meals are expected due to a potential federal shutdown—donors can drop off items at her office at 625 W 4th Ave or call 850-222-6133. - ➤ Three churches in Tallahassee have stepped in to care for over 240 children (100 each at Bethel Missionary Baptist and Anderson Chapel AME, and 40 at Oxford Learning Academy) after the federal Head Start program closed due to a government shutdown. - ➤ Leon teachers restarted bargaining after they rejected the school district’s low offer on October 23 (wearing black in protest as they called the proposal a slap in the face). Tallahassee Democrat
- ➤ FSU has chosen its police and public safety teams as honorary grand marshals for its Homecoming Parade—led by Chief Jason Trumbower and Assistant Vice President Barbara O’Connor. The parade will start at 2 p.m. Friday, Oct. 31 and will move from the Donald L. Tucker Civic Center parking lot along Macomb Street, turn west on College Avenue and then head south on Copeland Street. Florida State University

- ➤ Florida Forests Week starts October 26 and gives forest owners and managers a chance to show how forests help keep our water clean and air fresh (including support for wildlife and protection from floods). Researchers are studying these benefits as rapid land changes raise concerns about losing important natural services, and they urge steps to protect our working lands. Tallahassee Democrat

- ➤ Leon County Schools will vote next week on a policy to allow residents to use school tracks when they are not in use. The board will meet on Oct. 28 at the Aquilina C. Howell Instructional Services Center as part of a plan to open district facilities to the community. WCTV

- ➤ FSU is preparing students for Talloween weekend by providing resources and guidelines to help them enjoy events like the Terror of Tallahassee haunted house safely—students will benefit from free Narcan workshops, safe drinking advice, and support from FSU CHAW and FSUPD to curtail risks such as drink spiking and alcohol misuse.
