COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Federal food assistance for nearly 37,000 Leon County residents will end on November 1 due to the federal shutdown, and local nonprofits are mobilizing emergency food drives to support families. Second Harvest will serve 1,500 families on Saturday while Farm Share hosts a food distribution today at a local church—efforts that aim to ease the impact of the SNAP cut in the community.  Tallahassee Democrat

  • Cybersecurity experts advised Tallahassee business leaders during seminars that personal and corporate information is at risk from the Dark Web — they stressed using strong passwords, multi-factor authentication, and text alerts to help protect data.  WFSU Public Media

  • LeMoyne Arts and the Munroe-Skelton family will dedicate The Betty Ann Munroe Skelton Front Porch at LeMoyne Arts, 125 North Gadsden St., at 10 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 1—honoring her legacy and recalling her childhood view of the home as a 'happy house.'  Tallahassee Democrat
  • Young Actors Theatre will present Disney's The Little Mermaid starting Nov. 1 at 7 p.m. with additional shows on Nov. 2 and through Nov. 16 at 609 Glenview Drive—featuring over 100 talented students in both regular and sensory-friendly performances and offering tickets at $30 for adults and $25 for seniors and students.  Tallahassee Democrat

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Leon High School's Marching Redcoats earned their 75th consecutive superior rating at Gene Cox Stadium on Oct. 25 — a streak that began in 1950 — as they were one of 11 bands performing at the Florida Bandmasters Association District 3 event.  Tallahassee Democrat
  • FSU dance majors train in athletic skills and art at the School of Dance, practicing in six studios at Montgomery Hall and joining residency programs to build their technique—this program is led by Chair Helanius J. Wilkins who brings a background in sports and dance to guide students’ creative growth. The program offers in-house training and opportunities that help students prepare for future performances.  FSU News
  • Leon County Schools are considering closing some under capacity schools as enrollment drops due to state vouchers shifting funds to charter and private schools. Board members and education experts say low funding and teacher pay issues may force consolidation in the near future.  WFSU Public Media
  • Florida State University completed its rebrand that began in July 2024, unveiling a new academic mark with gold letters outlined in garnet to serve as its primary identity while reserving the traditional seal for formal use. In February 2025, the campus installed a nine‐foot aluminum sign near the Student Union and added a blue sign with campus facts as part of the DOT’s Great American Road Trip initiative for July 4.  FSU News

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Starting Saturday, state agencies will be monitored by the USDA Food and Nutrition Service after federal lawmakers removed SNAP work waivers for over 180,000 Floridians, including 90,000 homeless people, 55,000 older adults and 30,000 parents with teens, while exemptions remain for those pregnant or with disabilities—Florida lawmakers expressed concerns about notifying affected beneficiaries and the Department of Children and Families plans to explain new work requirements during recertification.  WFSU Public Media

  • Florida State soccer beat Wake Forest 4-1 on Oct. 30 at the Seminole Soccer Complex to secure its spot in the ACC tournament. Forward Jordynn Dudley scored twice to boost her season total to nine — and an early collision injured a Wake Forest player.  Tallahassee Democrat
  • FSU football's injury report (released ahead of its Nov. 1 game against Wake Forest) shows quarterback Tommy Castellanos is listed as probable after a head injury and running backs Roydell Williams and Kam Davis are questionable; the Seminoles will play at home at 7:30 p.m. on Nov. 1 (the game airs on ACC Network).  Tallahassee Democrat
  • The Chiles volleyball team beat Beachside 3-2 in a five-set match on Oct. 29—earning a spot in the state semifinals—and marking their third straight appearance in the final four.  Tallahassee Democrat
