COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Farm Share is asking for donations to support families who lost SNAP benefits, with donations down 28% from normal levels, according to director Mario Lopez. The nonprofit now needs money, food, and volunteers — urging the community to step up and prevent hunger.  WCTV
  • After two judges ruled that SNAP funding must continue, people lined up at Governor’s Square on November 1 as Second Harvest of the Big Bend handed out food to 1,500 households in less than three hours—leaving many worried about future food availability. CEO Monique Ellsworth said the community was thankful for the aid yet remains concerned about how quickly reserve funds will be released.  WFSU Public Media
  • On Oct. 31, Tallahassee veterans flew in a World War II-era biplane during the Dream Flight program hosted by the Florida Healthcare Association, Florida Veterans Foundation and Florida Department of Veterans Affairs. The 15-minute ride gave the veterans and their family a scenic view of downtown and nearby areas — a flight that honored their service.  WFSU Public Media

  • Modern family members from the historic Lemoyne headquarters gave a major gift that led the LeMoyne Art Center to name its front porch after Betty Ann Munroe Skelton—honoring 7 generations dating back to 1855 and linking the center’s future with its rich heritage—and promising ongoing support for its artistic mission.  WFSU

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The government shutdown caused many Head Start centers to lose their federal funds and close, leaving low-income children without meals and safe care during the day. In Leon County, centers in Tallahassee closed on Oct. 27 but reopened on Oct. 28 with a local grant — while centers in rural areas remain closed — forcing working parents to scramble for child care.  The Independent

SPORTS NEWS

  • Chiles Timberwolves defeated Beachside Barracudas in a five-set match, 20-25, 25-9, 23-25, 25-11, 15-9—keeping their state championship run alive as seniors and sophomores helped turn the game around. They will face Port Charlotte in the state semifinals at 7 p.m. on November 7 at Polk State College.  Tallahassee Reports
  • FSU players Tommy Castellanos, Earl Little Jr, and Ja'Brill Rawls backed coach Mike Norvell after the Wake Forest game+ they told reporters they support his leadership and the team’s direction.  Tallahassee Democrat
  • Florida State Soccer lost to Virginia in penalty kicks on Nov. 2 at Seminole Soccer Complex, ending their run of five straight ACC tournament titles. The game went to overtime—after two scoreless periods—and a missed penalty ended the Seminoles' hopes for a sixth title.  Tallahassee Democrat
  • Florida A&M lost 41 to 16 to Jackson State on November 1 & ended its SWAC title hopes. Coach James Colzie III said his team must improve & work hard in four remaining games to try finishing the season at 7 to 5.  Tallahassee Democrat
  • Florida State snapped its four-game ACC losing streak on November 1—defeating Wake Forest 42-7 at Doak S. Campbell Stadium during their Homecoming match.  FSU News
  • The Florida State Seminoles ended a losing streak of four games by beating Wake Forest 42 to 7 during their Homecoming game — energizing a crowd of 63,667 on Saturday night. They posted 421 total yards, scored six touchdowns from five different players, and now hold a record of 4 wins and 4 losses as they will travel to Clemson next Saturday.  WFSU
