  • Second Harvest of the Big Bend will host its second emergency food distribution at Governors Square Mall at 4 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 6 due to increased community need after residents lost SNAP benefits amid a government shutdown.  Tallahassee Democrat

EDUCATION NEWS

  • U.S. News & World Report released its list on Oct. 28 and Florida State University Schools became the only Tallahassee school in the state's top 100—showing math and reading proficiency scores of 83% and 72%.  Tallahassee Democrat
  • Florida State University hosted a panel at Discovery Days where child welfare experts explained how virtual reality training helps new workers practice for real cases—panelists noted that 81% of new hires leave early and FICW plans to expand VR simulations to four scenarios by spring.  Florida State University

  • Florida State University unveiled three bronze statues in the Student Union last week—each representing its core values of strength, skill, and character—that were cast from Florence molds and adapted with a local orange blossom.   • FSU’s College of Social Work hosted its 2025 Scholarship and Awards dinner where six distinguished alumni awards and over 90 student scholarships, totaling more than $109,625, were presented—highlighting the introduction of the new Dean’s Award honoring the MSW Class of 1975 for its sustained contributions to social work and human rights.  Florida State University
  • Alexis Fulton, a recent FSU law graduate now working as a staff attorney with Legal Services of North Florida, launched the Elder Domestic Violence Assistance Project in 2025 to support elder abuse survivors.   • Tallahassee State College was named among the top 200 community colleges in the nation by the Aspen Institute — one of nearly 1,000 schools reviewed — and is now eligible to compete for the $1 million Aspen Prize for Community College Excellence.   • Eight Florida State University students were named to the Florida Gubernatorial Fellows Class XXI, a yearlong program that places them at state agencies such as the Department of Environmental Protection and Division of Emergency Management — giving them real experience in government. They will finish the program with a formal policy research presentation to senior state leaders — a step that will prepare them for future public service roles.  Florida State University

  • Four candidates in the fall FSU SGA elections were reviewed for alleged Schedule 4 violations in a hearing on Oct. 28. The cases (including charges like offering free food for votes and using fake identities) led to a delay that conflicted with the Senate meeting on Oct. 29.  FSU News
  • United Launch Alliance’s Atlas V rocket will launch today from Cape Canaveral Space Force Station at 10:24 p.m. ET with a 44-minute window — the rocket will carry the ViaSat-3 Flight 2 satellite to boost broadband capacity. HEALTH NEWS

  • Premiums for Affordable Care Act plans surged after Biden-era subsidies expired, leaving Florida residents like Realtor Tim Krause facing monthly payments nearly doubling from $640 to $1,100—this rise has strained those with pre-existing conditions. Insurance agent Clifton Eserman said about 40% of his clients now must decide whether to switch plans to lower costs—which may require changing their doctor—or risk losing coverage.  CBS News
