- ➤ Volunteers from DISC Village, the Leon County Sheriff’s Office and Northside Kiwanis Club will build 30 bunk beds at DISC Village (3333 W. Pensacola St.) at 9 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 8 to mark the 100th Sleep in Heavenly Peace bed build supporting children in the Big Bend area. Tallahassee Democrat
- ➤ Leaders and advocates want to build a new childcare center in Tallahassee to support families working odd hours and ease costs that can use up 19% of household income—this proposal is backed by groups like the Tallahassee-Leon County Commission on the Status of Women and Girls and Kids Incorporated of the Big Bend to help kids learn and boost our local economy. - ➤ Two emergency food distributions were held in Tallahassee on November 6—cuts to SNAP left low-income families with less help—when Second Harvest of the Big Bend gave food at Governor’s Square Mall parking lot from 4 p.m. until supplies ran out, and the Tallahassee Urban League worked with community groups to give food at a Piggly Wiggly parking lot on South Monroe Street from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. WFSU

- ➤ Havana’s Doering’s Doughs has grown from a home bakery started in 2023 into a local favorite offering hand-braided challah and tangy sourdough at pop-up markets in Havana and Quincy — its treats also feature at Burned Beard Brewing. - ➤ FSU is preparing students for new EU travel rules as 29 countries began using the EES on Oct. 12 and ETIAS will add extra steps for short-term programs starting in the final quarter of 2026 — officials expect long-term study programs to face little change, noting that UK travel policies remain as they are. - ➤ Florida State University is celebrating first-generation students with FGEN week from November 5 through November 12, including a three-day Legacy Conference—featuring interactive workshops, student panels and networking sessions. - ➤ Nearly 3 million Florida families did not receive their November SNAP benefits because a government shutdown halted funding on November 1—one in eight Floridians relies on the program for food; two federal judges ordered a partial restart while state leaders said benefits will resume when the government reopens.
