COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Kelly Vinson, a former Big Bend teacher (organizer of the drive), is expanding the Blessing Basket drive by collecting baskets filled with essentials for a traditional Thanksgiving meal to support local families.  WCTV
  • Second Harvest of the Big Bend is teaming with 2-1-1 Big Bend, DoorDash and Keiser University to deliver prepared Thanksgiving meals to 1,000 Leon County families the day before Thanksgiving. The program will serve about 4,000 people and those in need may call 211 to request a meal.  Tallahassee Democrat

CULTURE NEWS

  • Local groups host varied events this week in Tallahassee — LeMoyne Arts opens its 62nd Holiday Show with a members preview on November 15, Theatre TSC presents A Doll’s House starting today at Turner Auditorium, Bach Parley stages a Baroque fusion on Saturday, and the Tucker Civic Center will hold a rock concert on Friday with music sessions at Blue Tavern rounding out the lineup.  Tallahassee Democrat

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Seraphine and her mate Nosferatu began nesting and laying eggs for the first time at North Florida Wildlife Center after arriving from Busch Gardens last year—Director Ryan Reines said this step boosts efforts to conserve the rare species.  WCTV

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • A United Launch Alliance Atlas V rocket is scheduled to launch today from Cape Canaveral Space Force Station at 10:04 p.m. ET with a 44-minute window — and Tallahassee residents may see the rocket in the sky pending weather conditions — as part of Viasat's broadband mission.  Tallahassee Democrat
  • Leon County government announced that Old Bainbridge Road from Tharpe Street to Raa Avenue will be closed from November 17 at 9 a.m. through December 4 at 5 p.m. for a water main replacement—detours will move southbound traffic along High Road then Tharpe Street and northbound traffic along Tharpe Street then High Road.  Tallahassee Democrat
  • Florida State University and Tallahassee Memorial HealthCare said that the plan for a special hospital taxing district is dead on arrival since neither ever proposed one and they will focus on building an academic health center to serve local residents—both parties oppose any extra tax burden. Local lawmakers and growth advocates debated the issue, but all involved confirmed no such tax will be created to fund hospital services.  Tallahassee Democrat

HEALTH NEWS

  • Bond Community Health Center opened its second pharmacy at the corner of South Monroe and Palmer Streets on Wednesday to help local residents get needed prescriptions after other drug stores closed. Local officials and community leaders joined the ribbon cutting, and the pharmacy now offers after-hours pickup with password-protected lockers.  WFSU

SPORTS NEWS

  • FSU head coach Mike Norvell talked about the Virginia Tech game and explained how the Seminoles will prepare to win — he said the team will focus on strong plays for victory.  Tallahassee Democrat
  • FSU offensive lineman Adrian Medley discussed his final home game as a Seminole—he said the game will be an emotional farewell for both him and his team.  Tallahassee Democrat
  • Maclay football holds a 7 to 3 record and will begin its Class 1A playoffs Friday night at home against NFEI. Coach Arie Slone said the team is prepared—rested and healthier after a week of open practice.  WCTV
  • Florida State men’s basketball lost to Florida 78-76 at the Stephen C. O’Connell Center on November 11—coach Luke Loucks used a small-ball strategy in his first game against the Gators since his playing days. FSU will adjust for its next game when it meets Tennessee at Martin on November 18 at the Donald L. Tucker Civic Center.  FSU News
  • Several Leon County schools competed in post season swim meets on Nov. 5th and Nov. 8th at Morcom Aquatics Center in Tallahassee and Florida Aquatics Swimming & Training in Ocala—Chiles, Lincoln, and Leon raced in the FHSAA 3A Region 1 meet while Maclay’s eighth grader Olivia Holt swam a personal best in the 100 fly at the FHSAA 1A State Championship. The FHSAA 3A State Championship will take place on Nov. 15 in Ocala.  Tallahassee Reports
