COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Tallahassee’s Kearney Center held a fundraiser at The Dwellings on Nov. 12 to support plans for increasing transitional housing for the formerly unhoused. Founder Rick Kearney said the center, which faced a $1.3 million budget cut — nearly one-third of its funds — will build 205 new units in early 2026.  WFSU Public Media

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Several Leon County schools increased security on Friday after social media posts suggested a threat at Fairview Middle, Rickards High, Cobb Middle, Kate Sullivan Elementary and Leon High. Law enforcement investigated the posts+and found one threat not credible, so all schools reopened by 1 p.m.+Officials say campuses remain safe.  Tallahassee Democrat
  • The Leon County School Board will discuss a $157,500 grant on November 18 to help Oak Ridge Elementary and Griffin Middle recruit and retain teachers at struggling schools that received a D grade from the state last year—if approved, the funds will boost bonuses and professional development.  Tallahassee Reports
  • Florida education leaders approved the Heritage Foundation’s Phoenix Declaration on Thursday to guide schools with principles that stress a love of country and proven teaching methods—new standards for teaching the history of communism were also set to compare ideas like the Communist Manifesto and the Bill of Rights.  Tallahassee Reports
  • FAMU alumnus DaCari Taylor's film In the Chateau will premiere today at 7 p.m. in Lee Hall auditorium—free for the public, and it runs 90 minutes to show the HBCU experience with current students and alumni in key roles.   • Attorney General James Uthmeier issued an emergency rule on Aug. 15 banning 7-OH—a concentrated kratom byproduct sold in drinks, gummies, and powders—from smoke shops amid safety concerns. Businesses and users filed a complaint Monday alleging the rule was adopted through flawed procedures, causing significant economic losses and risking harm reduction efforts for opioid addiction.  WFSU Public Media

  • FSU students hosted the 11th Annual Florida Statement to raise funds for UF Health Shands Children's Hospital and the Pediatric Outreach Program, collecting over $333,000 in 26.2 hours. The event, themed 'More Than Medicine,' featured activities such as a wing eating contest — students and community members worked together to support family-centered care.  FSU News
