COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Tallahassee’s American Legion post held a respectful flag-burning ceremony on Nov. 22 to retire worn, torn, or discolored flags (this method being one of three approved options) as the flags were saluted and the Pledge of Allegiance recited. The event also explained that flags can be dropped off at the post at Lake Ella (a community disposal box) or buried with a moment of silence.  WFSU

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • A fire at The Social Seminole last Wednesday displaced 30 Florida State University students from India — leaving them with nothing — and a GoFundMe raised $50,000 as local groups and university officials provided support with new documentation and household donations.  WCTV

CRIME NEWS

  • Residents in a Midway neighborhood said stray pit bulls have roamed the streets for over a year—causing bites and fear—and rescue groups say crowded shelters and few resources have made the problem worse.  ABC 27

ECONOMY NEWS

  • The post office will deliver mail on Black Friday, Nov. 28 after closing on Thanksgiving Day—banks, stock markets and courier services will resume operations with adjusted hours, and many retailers and restaurants will open with extended hours for holiday shoppers. EDUCATION NEWS

  • Florida State University has named Louisa Blenman as executive director of International Programs; she will officially start on Dec. 5 to lead global study abroad efforts. Blenman, who served as interim director since May 2024 and brings 30 years of international education experience, was chosen following Jim Pitts’ retirement after a 56-year career.  Florida State University
  • Florida State University’s Jim Moran College of Entrepreneurship is ranked as one of the Top 10 public entrepreneurship programs by Princeton Review for 2026. Over the past five years, its graduates launched 531 companies and the college offers over 125 courses that give students real-world business skills — a sign of its growing impact.  Florida State University

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • A cold front is moving into Tallahassee Tuesday night, bringing thunderstorms and near-freezing wind chills on Thanksgiving and Black Friday mornings — the National Weather Service says. The region recently tied record high temperatures and now faces an ongoing exceptional drought — conditions expected to persist into winter.  Tallahassee Democrat
  • A Leon County circuit judge yesterday rejected a request by Bear Warriors United to block Florida’s first black bear hunt in a decade. The three-week hunt is set to begin Dec. 6 and will use 172 permits in four regions to manage the bear population—designed to limit impact on female bears.  CBS News

  • Bill Cotterell, 82 (a veteran reporter who covered Florida government for over four decades), died Monday at a rehabilitation center while he recovered from norovirus and a bleeding ulcer.  Tallahassee Reports

  • The Florida Gators will play the Florida State Seminoles at 4:30 p.m. Saturday in Tallahassee for their 69th meeting — Florida leads the all-time series 38 to 28 with 2 ties.  Tallahassee Democrat
