COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Tallahassee’s Champions Ranch project will hold its formal groundbreaking at 9 a.m. Monday, Dec. 1 on a 112-acre site south of Capital Circle (where athletic facilities will be built) and is led by Tonja Ward (wife of FAMU head coach Charlie Ward) to offer new healthy activities for kids and families.  WFSU Public Media

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • On November 28th, a small group of visitors braved the cold to see Lake Jackson drain down one day after Thanksgiving. The lake emptied through a sinkhole called Porter Sink amid a drought — its rare dry downs have been recorded since 1837 and have fueled local debates over new development.  Tallahassee Democrat
  • Officials report that drought has worsened in 16 counties in the Big Bend and South Georgia after October proved to be the 33rd driest on record. Rainfall since January has been 12.26 inches below normal—only 41.96 inches fell—and burn bans remain in effect to limit fire risks.  ABC 27

  • Former FDLE Commissioner James 'Tim' Moore died Wednesday from complications of a 2021 stroke. He served with FDLE for over 30 years — rising from a mailroom position to commissioner while expanding the agency’s staff and budget during his 16-year tenure.  WCTV

SPORTS NEWS

  • FSU soccer head coach and team players discussed their plans for advancing to the College Cup — they are working to strengthen their lineup as the tournament approaches.  Tallahassee Democrat
  • Today at 4:30 p.m. on ESPN2, Florida State will face the Florida Gators in Gainesville—Florida is 3-8 on the season with wins over Long Island, Texas and Mississippi State while the rivalry record stands at 28-38-2, with Florida State's last win coming in 2023.  Tallahassee Reports
  • FSU basketball player AJ Swinton was shaped by his family's fight against cancer, with his mother surviving blood cancer while his grandfather and aunt were lost. He uses his platform to support cancer research by joining events like the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society walk — a cause that reminds him to lean on others for help.  Tallahassee Democrat
  • Florida A&M will end its season today with a rescheduled football game against Mississippi Valley State at 3 p.m. ET from Rice-Totten Stadium in Itta Bena & the contest will be streamed live on SWAC TV.  Tallahassee Democrat
  • Florida State soccer advanced to the College Cup with a 4-1 win over Ohio State on Friday night at the Seminole Soccer Complex (Jordynn Dudley scored twice to build an early lead). They will face the Vanderbilt-TCU winner in the semifinal round on December 5 (the championship game is set for December 8).  WCTV
